Do the radio signals that 802.11 use travel in a single plane or a spherical shape?

That is if a wireless access point is upstairs can I reasonably expect to get a steady signal.

Looking for a technical answer about radio signals travel, I guess.

you can imagine it to be spherical, although I would say it is kinda irregular and oval. Also depends on obstructions and interference.

depends on the how your antenna sends out the signal - but typically if the antenna is pointed up then you will get a stronger signal horizontally than vertically
