Quote : | " Drew Brees let the secret slip -- the San Diego Chargers would like to sign him to a long-term deal.
Brees was discussing his shoulder surgery and rehab during a conference call with San Diego reporters on Wednesday when he was asked if the team had told him anything about his future.
"They want to pursue me long-term," Brees said from Birmingham, Ala. "I know that's something that for the next few months everybody's going to be working on. As far as what's going on up to this point, it's not much, just the very beginning stages. I know they want me long-term and I want to be here long-term."
General manager A.J. Smith, who's always tightlipped about player transactions, at first refused to confirm that he or anyone else from the front office told Brees that.
"We don't have any comment on our business until we're complete with our business," Smith told The Associated Press.
Brees' agent, Tom Condon, said he hadn't heard from the Chargers.
"I know that Drew told me that, but I've had no conversations with the Chargers," Condon said.
A few hours later, Smith called reporters back to confirm what Brees said.
"We are going to try to long-term him," Smith said. "We originally wanted to do this in early February, but I guess Drew was just answering the question honestly."
Smith said he called Brees last Wednesday, a day before the quarterback had his torn right labrum repaired by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham.
...
Backup quarterback Philip Rivers has pocketed more than $14.25 million while playing sparingly the last two seasons. He still has four years left on his contract, which is potentially worth $40.5 million. The Chargers have said that they will have enough room under the salary cap to carry Brees and Rivers again next year." |

AJ isn't gonna give him the kind of money that he wants.
If he is really serious about wanting to stay with the Chargers, they'll work out a deal. But he could get more money elsewhere, and if thats the bottom line, he's gone.
Rivers will raise hell behind the scenes if they sign Brees to a long-term deal. Hopefully they cave in and trade him, for his own good.

You know Rivers is happy that he held out at this point. If Bree's had beat him out for the starting job his rookie year, he would be making jack right now due to the amount of incentives they tried to include in his original deal. 1/12/2006 8:18:07 AM |

Well, maybe if Rivers turns out to be a bust, he can make bank watching film for the next several years, and come back and become our next head coach after CTC retires. 1/12/2006 8:33:43 AM |

quote from a friend:
Quote : | "I think the strategy is more of driving up the cost of Rivers. If people think that Brees is available (since tagging him the franchise player would be way too expensive for the Chargers), no one will trade for Rivers. If they think Rivers is merely an insurance policy until Brees gets healthy, teams will have to fight over Rivers." |

just because they say they're going to work on a long-term deal with brees doesn't necessarily mean they'll reach one
Quote : | "It's not clear if any initial offer made by the Chargers would be high enough for Brees and his agent to consider seriously. If unable to reach a deal with Brees by Feb. 23, it is likely the Chargers would make Brees their transition player, a designation that is similar to being a franchise player but would not guarantee Brees' $9.7 million one-year contract until he made the opening-day roster." |

Honestly they are fucking idiots if they sign Brees to a contract now.
Unless they get him at a real bargain price. I'm talking $3-$4 million a season bargain.
Why the fuck woudlnt they just take the $8million in cap room that would be freed by letting Brees go and get WR's or defensive help and try to win a Super Bowl?
It's like they're perfectly happy just going 10-6 every year... 1/12/2006 3:31:14 PM |

I'm sure they probably are trying to do a rather low contract. They really have no incentive to give Brees a big contract anyway, being they could just franchise him/trade him. At most, Brees could expect a Delhomme type deal from the Bolts, which would make sense for then. No way will they offer even close to Brady money. It is the chargers after all. 1/12/2006 4:08:01 PM |

Here's to hoping they offer Brees the same incentive-based deal they offered Rivers. 1/12/2006 10:59:12 PM |
