I'm trying to take a scanned black & white illustration and turn the white part transparent to make a GIF button for a webpage. How can I do it in Photoshop?

open up the layers pallette, right click on the layer and select "layer from background" and then click ok. click on the magic wand, uncheck the "contiguous" box, set the tolerance to about 30 then click on a white area and then press the delete button. then when you are done you can go to save for web and select one of the gif presets and make sure the transparency box is checked.

File > "Save for Web", or "Export to GIF" depending on your version.
