Does anyone even care about this thing? if you ask me it's just gonna be a huge joke...it's a wanna-be olympics. I think instead of country vs. country it should be steroid users vs. non steroid users....i would definately watch that.

I honestly could care less about this and I enjoy MLB. The thing that turns most people off of this is the fact that MLB last about 2 years for one season and people are tired of baseball by the time the WS is over.

what i like about spring training, since someone brought it up, is that you can see several different teams in a couple days if you really want to...

florida is pretty sweet in march

Did anyone else see the US roster? I cannot believe how weak the outfield is. The IF looks strong though...

This is from an article I saw:
Quote :
"Clemens was among four starters selected for a 14-man U.S. pitching staff, joined by Jake Peavy, Dontrelle Willis and C.C. Sabathia. Changes to the roster can be made through March 2, five days before the U.S. opener. A 10-man bullpen was chosen partly because of pitch-count limits.

The rest of the roster:
Relievers: Chad Cordero, Brian Fuentes, Todd Jones, Brad Lidge, Joe Nathan, Scot Shields, Huston Street, Mike Timlin, Billy Wagner, Dan Wheeler.

Catchers: Mike Barrett, Brian Schneider, Jason Varitek

Infielders: Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones, Derrek Lee, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Chase Utley, Michael Young

Outfielders: Johnny Damon, Jeff Francouer, Ken Griffey Jr., Matt Holliday, Vernon Wells, Randy Winn

Twenty-two players who were on the provisional 52-man roster were dropped. Among them were pitchers Jeremy Bonderman, Roy Halladay, Dan Haren, Tim Hudson, Brett Myers, Andy Pettitte, Ben Sheets, Al Leiter and Gary Majewski; catchers Paul Lo Duca, Joe Mauer and Chad Moeller; infielders Eric Chavez, Craig Counsell, Morgan Ensberg, Bill Hall, Jimmy Rollins and David Wright; and outfielders Lance Berkman, Barry Bonds, Carl Crawford and Luis Gonzalez.

Bonds and several others had withdrawn, citing their need to rehabilitate following injuries.

I am disappointed the Wright, Crawford, and Mauer were left off. These three are some of the best young stars in the game and all could have helped the team more than Chipper (tough to admit as a Braves fan), Winn/Francouer/Holliday, and Barrett/Schneider respectively. I also wish they had kept Sheets (assuming he's healthy) over Sabathia since Sheets was awesome against the international competition back in the 2000 Olympics. Sabathia had a great 2nd half last year, but I think Sheets deserved a spot on the team.

Anyone up for making fearless predictions for this thing?

Winner: Venezuela
Runner-up: USA
Semifinalists: Japan (lose to Venezuela in semis) and Cuba (lose to USA in semis)

Dominican Republic (flop!), South Korea, Mexico, and Panama are the other teams to make the final 8.

i think we will take it, our pitching has tremendous depth, and we have a star pretty much at every position, just dont have a very good coach.

I know most people dont care about this but overseas it is a big deal. Japan and other countries think they will beat us. If they do than is what we have a true world series? They argue that it is not. I guess we will have to wait and see. I hope we win so I don't have to listen to any shit from my Japanese friends.

Players are dropping like flies. I had great hope for this thing, but it is becoming more and more apparent that this might be the first and last year of the WBC.

That was a badass commercial though.

The MLB stars taking off their team jerseys and hats and putting on their country jerseys and hats. That was sweet.

And I have to admit, I got a little excited when I saw A-Rod and Jeter wearing Team USA jerseys.

Does anyone know off the top of their heads if these games will be broadcast on MLB.tv before I go looking it up?

just hope it doesn't cause pitchers to wear down in sept. and oct. when it counts. also, watch for major leaugers to start dropping like flies when the tweaked hammies and sore arms start to occur in the classic.

^^^ Pedro's toe had nothing to do with the WBC. The WBC didn't cause him to injure his toe. It's been affecting him for a long time now.

didn't say it was caused by the wbc. just saying that small injuries and minor discomforts will end up preventing many players from playing/continuing to play as this event progresses. i don't think it is a bad thing that this is the case, as i wouldn't want a player i had invested allot of money in risking further injury that could cost him time during the regular season. but i guarantee injuries will occur in this thing that will cause players to miss time. the season is just so long and i dont see the need for the wbc. however being a sports junkie, yes i will watch.

Yeah, it definitely makes more sense to have it after the season. This way, even if injuries do occur, the player could heal over the offseason.

That said, I don't have cable TV at my apt, but I'm getting MLB.tv so I can watch this.

South Korea upsets Japan 3-2. Both still advance to quarterfinals (where they will probably play the USA). Taiwan beats China 12-3.

South Korea 3-0
Japan 2-1
Taiwan 1-2
China 0-3

In a spring training game, Puerto Rico beating the New York Mets 4-1 in the 6th.

Yeah, it is weird because he sucked ass in his short stint as a manager. If we are going to have a courtesy managerial position we might as well pick some Make-A-Wish kid.
