ok so my brother's power steering pump ate it and is spewing fluid all over. we need to replace it tonight. i've never replaced one and noone has a manual in the area. so, TWW, how's it done? what do i need? 4.0l XJ

sure it's the pump and not a line? pretty common for the low pressure to split right at the pump, and the high pressure to fail right at the crimped connection (where the soft line connects to the short bit of hard line).

well my brother took it to a shop for a free diagnosis and they said the bearings ate it and allowed fluid through. my brother did say the pulley is wobbly so it sounds right. i havent seen it yet myself.

You got a power steering pump pulley puller? You'll need one. Because none of the reman units on the market come with the pulley. And it's pressed on. And if you use a conventional puller, you'll bend the fuck out of the pulley. Ask me sometime how I know this; I learned the hard way about 14 years ago.

quickest, easiest way to do it is get one from a junkyard, itll come with the bracket and all. might as well replace the serpentine belt while youre in there

i've done 2. get a pulley puller like zxappeal said. remove old pump, pull pulley, put it on the new one. bolt new pump/pulley combo on and put the belt back on and adjust. remove the hoses in there also if you need any help pm me

word. we called pops and he told us what to do. we got the puller and pump, etc last night and my brother is gonna give it a shot himself today. should be pretty straight forward
