^ I dunno, Dell has made some very awful laptops. The most often issue seems to be heat related issues.

Toshiba has some very nice laptops recently. A few years ago I wouldn'thave said that but I have been impressed with the newer ones I have worked with. (More impressed than with the Dells at least.)

i never heard of it before i got one for christmas but i have an averatec....it's small and has like everything on it i love it....also my old hp pavillion was an awesome computer...i mean as far as i'm considered and obviously i'm not a computer genius...just an opinion.

my original one is still going strong after 5 years of constant use. by this point it is a VERY close second to a mouse.

Here's the deal. Lenovo is going to try "new" marketing strategy.

1) Keep ThinkPad series. Quality, sturdy magnesium roll cage, security features like the Finger Print Reader. Cater to the business world and the rich folks who can afford them. The ThinkPad brand is the only thing that has held strong for Lenovo's PC Division (formerly known as IBM's PC Division).

2) Bring out the new Chinese "Lenovo" sub-series. Cheap, just like Dell. No more red dot (aka Track Point). Cater to the everyday user and to compete with Dell's prices. Will be made of same cheap plastic that Dell's are made out of.

How do I know this? Well, I'd have to kill you if I told you (that's a lot of dead TWW'ers )

Lenovo Thinkpads still say IBM everywhere on them. In fact, aside from a little pink slip of paper when you open the box that says, "Hey this is made by Lenovo even though everywhere else it says IBM" Lenovo isn't mentioned anywhere.

oh yeah btw, IBM/Lenovo laptops are the luxury class laptop of the laptop world. apple laptops are more akin to a fancy Nissan 350z or something. even more so now that they're using intel chips

recently we've been exploring manufacturers for a new line of laptops. Toshiba Toughbooks at $2500 each is a bit pricy but necessary for field technicians who use them as foot rests.

I tried an Acer... fucking horrible mistake. The laptop is AWESOMe except for the simple fact that it won't let you change the resolution without scrolling issues. They have no plan to resolve this. We returned it for a Toshiba Tecra. Absolutely 0 problems with it and has all the connections they could need. Even the 9 pin serial. Yes i know there is an adapter but for some fucked up reason the older software they are using doesn't work with it.

I'm very satisfied with the Toshiba Tecra series. Geforce video card, 64 bit processor. Here, take a look http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=Suggested&Description=34-114

Plus this keeps most of our laptops as Toshiba, and even uses the same battery as the newer Toughbooks we have.

well, after owning about 3 Dell laptops and 2 desktops, I just might not know about their quality. maybe.

to make it clear, I wasn't talking about those $600 laptop deals. I have never used the cheap ones, and I am sure none of the IBM ones come cheap. So comparing apples with oranges is futile. The higher end Dell laptops are rock solid. Granted, I have never driven a truck over them so I can't say if they are physically durable, but they pass my handling really well.

You can find very very sleek Dell laptops if you pay for them. and they'd still work out cheaper than the red dots.

I must be lying about not having a single heating problem.

Panasonic makes the Toughbooks - and they do what they say; you can litereally run over the laptop with a car and it would be fine.

I really like the Portege ultra-portable one, it is amazing for its size. It is no powerhouse but they make great laptops that you can carry around and not know its in your briefcase/bookbag.

The IBM label is still on Lenovo machines because of corporate red-tape. They made a deal during the buy, that Lenovo had to keep IBM logo on the systems for the first 2 years. Then they could change it over. It has to do with IBM's service and support (they still want to make money off of that, even though they don't own the PC Division anymore).
