anyone from there or currently live there?
my fiancé and i are looking for a 1-2 bedroom, pet-friendly apartment to move into in may or june. we're going to do some footwork in about a month (ie, drive up there and check out the few places we know about), but i figured i'd look for more suggestions on here. 1/19/2006 6:24:50 PM |

honestly, the place was recommended to us. our general vicinity is set in stone (ie, roughly halfway between raleigh and roanoke rapids), and wendell was suggested as a bearable place to spend the next 5 years. 1/19/2006 6:30:36 PM |

If you're going to be somewhere 5 years, you may want to consider buying, especially in a rural area with cheap houses and few rentals. Just a thought. 1/19/2006 6:50:59 PM |

first of all wendell isnt halfway to roanoak rapids. its bascially in raleigh with respect to rr. if you want outside of raleigh i advise looking at wake forest, knightdale, or rolesville in that order. if you truly want to be halfway then look at henderson or rocky mount maybe even louisburg.
^and this kid is right. renting is basically throwing away your money. new homes in these areas are nicely priced (except wake forest)

*lol* Wendell is not half way between Raleigh and Roanoke Rapids. Sorry, but it's the truth.
Wendell puts you 17 miles closer to Roanoke Rapids, which is 90 miles away. The person commuting to Roanoke Rapids is getting seriously shafted on this deal. Rocky Mount is actually closer to being the half way point.
But Wendell is a nice little community. I would buy before I would rent there.

thing is, we don't have the credit to buy a home. and we don't have the money to buy the house, or keep up with the interest that comes with a morgage. when i finish my phd (hopefully 2011), we want to be able to go whereever we want/need, and not be tied down with an owned home.
ok, apparently he knows it's an hour drive. i thought we were still on a halfway plan. so that issue can stop being debated

no not shafted. She got the wrong impression that it was halfway. It's about an hour drive from me. Which I'm fine with....so no...not shafted at all.
Also, Rocky mount is only 30 min from me....the halfway point is closer to Nashville.

a 1 hour commute is terrible. That's like working 10 extra unpaid hours a week. Add that up for a year and see how much you are paying by living so far. 1/19/2006 7:16:58 PM |

I understand the gas and time committed. I've been going back and forth from Raleigh anyways, which is an hour and a half. I'm not saying that it's the best thing in the world....but to me it's tollerable. Over an hour and a half would have been pushing it, but driving an hour every day to and from isn't too bad. Besides, I drive alot in the job I'm in now....I get sent all over Halifax Co, and to Raleigh and Fayetteville, so it doesn't even phase me as much anymore. 1/19/2006 7:19:41 PM |

It is 72 miles from Wendell to Roanoke Rapids. 140 miles a day spent driving. . .140 miles a day of gas money down the tubes.
Wow. Holy shit. If your car gets 30 miles to the gallon and gas is 2 dollars a gallon that's like 180 some dollars a month put in your gas tank just to get to work. I could buy a whole lot with that.

True...72 miles...I do know that....still only takes an hour cause of the speed..
yes...understand the money too.....but sometimes in life guys you gotta make decisions. I have a great job, with great experience, medical, benifits, and great pay.....it's good for me and Kitty....now I can give that up and move into raleigh, OR we can compromise and move inbetween and I'll drive. It's just a decision guys.....you can buy great shit for that amount of money, and I can stay with the one I love every day....what would you pick? 1/19/2006 7:26:39 PM |

you seriously need to also consider the 401 route and cities like wake forest and louisburg. less trafic and better towns. there arent many apartments in wendell and 90% of the stuff in wendell is a good distance from 64. if you want 64 look at knightdale which is right next to wendell or even zebulon which is on the other side of wendell. they both have more options and knightdale is a better town. 1/19/2006 7:27:06 PM |
Monkeychow Starting Lineup 65 Posts user info edit post |
Is there alot of apartments in Zebulon? I had considered that but couldn't find any Apts there.
Also Knightdale is an extra 10 minutes to my trip, and only has 2 apt complexes. Both are pretty pricy.

Honestly and seriously, I gave up a job in Gaston, NC because it was worth more to me to have the extra 3-4 hours of my life every day to spend with my fiance.
Knightdale is too pricey, trust me. If you look further out in places like Zebulon the price will go down, but there will be fewer options.

my dad lives in wendell...a little ways down from the midway amusement park, in a big ass house across the street from some salt box houses, wendell is ok, but property taxes are ridiculous. live in louisburg, my mom lives there. 1/19/2006 7:34:02 PM |

*nods* I agree....BUT I unfortunately have bills to pay...between credit cards and student loans.....and the job I'm at is giving me good experience to get an even better job later...cause lets face it...w/o the experience, in my field you're pretty much left to dry......If I didn't have the constraints that I have, I would agree with you and go get another job and live in raleigh. 1/19/2006 7:34:39 PM |

Now my fiance swears that there is a better way to get to Roanoke Rapids than doing the whole 64/95 drive. And if you do look at taking the more northern route, there are some other areas you might want to consider looking to live that some other people have been suggesting. 1/19/2006 7:36:42 PM |
Monkeychow Starting Lineup 65 Posts user info edit post |
Well, I did try looking for the more northern places, but the problem is in finding Apartments......Louisburg didn't seem to have any listed on the maps.... 1/19/2006 7:37:47 PM |

since i am from halifax co originally
louisburg is a good bet
hwy 561 out of the county will take you there and its 45 min to raleigh
take 401 to 56 to us 1 for the faster speeds since 401 is 2 lane to raleigh
there are houses for rent in louisburg and/or franklinton 1/19/2006 7:39:24 PM |
bottombaby IRL 21954 Posts user info edit post |
with some of the more rural areas, you have to actually do the foot work to hunt them down because they aren't listed 1/19/2006 7:39:33 PM |
Monkeychow Starting Lineup 65 Posts user info edit post |
well louisburg does sound good...but renting a house is WAY too expensive on just my salary alone. 1/19/2006 7:42:17 PM |
socrates Suspended 1964 Posts user info edit post |
like i said, check out rolesville louisburg or wake forest if you have to. every apartment complex is not listed on maps. dont use mapquest to decide your next 5 years. GO PLACES AND CHECK THINGS OUT FOR YOURSELF.
the more i think about it, the less logical having almost an hour of 95 of your everyday two way commute is. this is one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the country and you are bound to spend some whole days stuck on it. about 5 times a year theres a huge wreck and a whole direction is shut down for hours. add in everyday slowdowns from minor rush hour accidents and youre looking at a living hell. 1/19/2006 7:43:15 PM |
bottombaby IRL 21954 Posts user info edit post |
Dude, renting apartments can cost just as much as renting houses. My fiance and I have a 1 bedroom apartment that's $645 a month (given its in cary and has a sunroom) and you can rent a house in the country for the same amount.

Only payed 500 a month in Greenville for a 2 bedroom place.....it's possible to find cheaper....besides with a house you have to remember you got to pay for water, gas...and the electric and heating will be more because of more space. 1/19/2006 7:52:29 PM |

well, we're considering checking that out..cause of backroads....the argument about 64 and 95 with traffic was definately something I didn't take into consideration.....and we'll have to goto Lousiburg to see 1/19/2006 8:27:41 PM |

Monkeychow get a diesel VW. I commute 1.5 hours into Cheraw, SC everyday (3 hrs/day total 160 miles/day).
Doesn't really phase me anymore.
However, I only spend about $30/week on fuel.

^fuel costs are negligible compared to time costs. The correct way to calculate time cost is to simply take your pay rate and multiply it by hours spent commuting. 3 hours extra a day comes out to a huge percentage of your salary.
It's a huge opportunity cost that most likely isn't worth it. 1/19/2006 8:56:53 PM |

I have a diesel VW golf and I can go all the way to Cleveland, Ohio on nearly 1 tank.
