so my Final Fantasy XI disk wasn't working and after reading on the XBOX forums, I boiled it in water for about half a minute. It's working perfectly now!
Can anyone explain this phenomenon? 1/21/2006 6:41:04 PM |

and it has nothing to do with smoothening the surface. I am talking about a brand new DVD I bought yesterday with a magazine that wouldn't work. 1/21/2006 6:52:21 PM |

does it work with DVD-R's as well? haven't read the forum you mentioned yet... 1/21/2006 6:54:19 PM |

I have no clue and that is why I am asking.
For the record, the DVD wasn't scratched or anything. It was brand new and the XBOX wasn't reading it. 1/21/2006 6:55:01 PM |

I wonder who the first guy to think "well gee, I wonder what will happen if I stick this DVD in some boiling water!" was, and how he went from that, to sticking the boiled disc in his xbox.
because that is some crazy ass logic right there. 1/21/2006 10:00:00 PM |

I wouldn't think this trick would work with the DVD-Rs because aren't they heat activated? I think it would ruin them. 1/21/2006 10:27:22 PM |

the reason is obvious boiling stuff in water kills germs. electronics dont work because of bugs, which are also germs. boiling stuff kills the techno germs.
i recently boiled my laptop when it got a virus and it killed the virus 2/1/2006 4:15:15 PM |

the boiling water removes the thin film or residue left over from the disc manufacturing process. this film causes the disc to be read incorrectly, and interpreted as a "dirty disc" or "disc read error"
it doesnt change the size or shape of the disc, doesnt smooth the plastic, doesnt melt the silkscreened image on the top of the disc, just removes the residue from the disc that cant be removed by just an alcohol cleaner solution or simple wiping. Its the heat of the boiling water that does it [/thread] 2/1/2006 4:27:41 PM |
