"Canadian voters veered slightly right Monday, electing Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper as their next prime minister but denying him the outright majority he would need to take any strong change in direction. Prime Minister Paul Martin, whose scandal-plagued Liberal Party was ousted after 12 years in power, conceded defeat."

CNN's front page basically makes it sound like the liberals screwed way up, and that was only enough to nudge Canada a little.

Democratic governments are supposed to reflect the people they represent. Christian majorities usually elect Christians.

What sort of fucktard statement is that?

Obviously they elect christians.

Fucking point out the Muslim or Jew president we've had.

Don't be stupid. Its pretty obvious what he is trying to say.

Liberals are usually pretty secular, generally they leave their faith at home when it comes to politics.

Conservatives are usually outspoken in their Christianity and it shapes their politics.

How come if someone has any little tiny bit of religious faith at all suddenly you brand them as "theocrat". What kind of a bigoted person are you?

The liberals over there have put out some really stupid attack commercials lately. One claiming that the conservatives would put "soldiers on the streets... soldiers... with guns... on the street... with guns... soldiers... street."

Pretty much the same reason that it happened here. The minority ruling party tries to pick up votes through baseless attacks rather than running on a platform of representing people or some crazy idea like that.

I guess mudslinging has reached critical mass? People now have the opposite response that the mud slinger would expect.

The liberal party has been in control for 13 years. After several scandals of sorts Canadians wanted a change. The are still VERY anti-American (thank God). I have a feeling that the same thing will happen in England the next go-around since the new conservative leader there just adopted most ALL of Tony Blairs positions and is trying to stick a conservative label on them. Keep in mind that the conservatives in Canada didn't get a majority, so this isn't like W's self-perpetuated Mandate from God Himself.

How about a secular or non-religious leader? That's where I was going with it.

I always chuckle at this spin when just back in the '90s the Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservatives collectively had Parliament seats in the single digits...

The Conservatives took power because the Liberal Party screwed up bad; "they got cocky" as someone told the BBC. We have to remember that Canadian politics is a very different animal: the Liberal Party has pretty much controlled Canadian government for most of its history. I'm pretty sure they'll come back to power once they've reorganized.

Mr. Martin went a bit overboard on the anti-Americanism this time around, even by Canadian standards. Most of the Canadians called him on that, viewing the Liberal Party's smear campaign as more the desperate attempts to deflect attention by a scandal-ridden politician.

Because they often force their religion on others who donot follow the same religion in the form of laws that why. The theocrats (of any religion) must be fought at all costs on every corner of this planet. I don't give damn about your religion, you can worship a toadstool for all I care. I just don't want you passing laws that reflect YOUR religion and YOUR morals and since that's something most religious people cannot do that's why I oppose them being elected. Plus religion equals DeathWorship anyway.

Conservative - 124 seats - 36.25% of the overall vote
Liberal - 103 seats - 30.22%
Bloc Quebecois - 51 seats - 10.48%
New Democratic Party - 29 seats - 17.49%
Independent - 1 seat

The previous makeup was: Liberal 135, Conservative 99, Bloc 54, NDP 19, Indy 1

The New Democratic Party are to the left of the Liberal Party. And the Bloc Quebecois, although advocating nationalist positions for sovereignty, tend to be left, although they're a bit across the board.

What happened was that the Conservatives and Liberals switched. Although the Conservatives are in a weaker position than the Liberals in the previous legislature (124 vs. 135). The vote was more get out the Liberals than put in the Conservatives, as the Liberals went down 32, but the Conservatives only gained 25 of those, while the NDP gained 10 to position itself as a more effective kingmaker.

It'd be nice to live in a country there was more of a choice than Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum...

I don't even go that far.

I don't mind the "religious asshats" having a voice in government like the rest of us. I'd just rather the volume of that voice be a little more representative of their portion of our society's makeup as it would be in a parliamentary system.

I wouldn't mind them either if they didn't try to push their religion on everyone else. But since they insist, they must be fought at all costs.

Canada's Conservative party is much like Americas, with an uneasy alliance between the social conservatives and the fiscal conservatives, aka the Tories.

What concerns me is that Harper came from the social conservative portion of the party. I would rather see a guy like Peter MacKay become leader as a model for our country's conservatives. A fiscal conservative and social moderate, he's much more palatable than the firebrand Christian conservatives that dominate the Republican party.

haha, some of you idealogues are funny

Le Bloc Quebecois would be my choice

one of the first things the conservatives promised to do (after lowering taxes 1%, which is dandy), was allot 1,000 some odd dollars to each family for child care.

so now the national sales tax is = to NC's and they're still providing these services. thats nice.

This is going to last until the next election, and if they do something right it might last until the one after that, but I doubt it'll last much after that.

Sooner or later the corruption will begin again (politicians suck like that).
