My dog will occasionally "cough" when he gets very excited or when he drinks his water quickly. When I first adopted him, the foster told me of his condition and said the coughing was caused a collapsed trachea from being jerked around on a leash. She took Major to the vet and the vet said it would not cause any problems but he might occasionally have coughing spells and to always keep him on a harness. He has been coughing quite regularly tonight and I had him in my lap and it smelled faintly like blood. Perhaps the chew bones he has had today have irritated it. Any suggestions? 1/29/2006 12:28:57 AM |

Yeah, my cat jumped in my lap and ripped one the other day... but I SOOOO deserved it, I have bombed his ass about a mole times... including numerous "stuck under the covers incidents"

It depends on what the "new chew bones" are, though they may have nothing to do with it...I mean, the dog has a fucking collapsed trachea.
Wait it out for a couple more days and see if it gets better. My guess is that it will. If not, well, see a professional. 1/29/2006 1:40:21 AM |

If the dog's been chewing bones he may have a piece stuck in his throat and it might not be related to the collapsed trachea.
Only way to find out is go to the doc...of course that would cost $texas
Don't feed your dog bones. 1/29/2006 9:23:00 AM |

Our dog was doing that too, as well as making a honking sound, so we took him in to the vet. She said there was nothing really wrong with him (we never jerked him around on a collar.) She said the noise he was making was called a 'reverse sneeze.' <--Google that or the official term 'Paroxysmal Respiration' 1/29/2006 10:20:09 AM |

He is allowed to have bones that can be digested, like rawhides but I found out today they are just pure fat so to use them sparingly.
I called his previous rescue and she said that it would sound a lot worse than it really is and to watch him for a few days before taking him anywhere.
It's likely he is just coughing from irritation. I think it may have something to do with this weather because even I'm coughing up blood. Damn weather. 1/29/2006 2:14:14 PM |
