five titles my ass...... [Time out for a brief discussion about UNC's so-called 1924 'Helms Foundation' national title. UNC fans would have you believe that's a pre-NCAA poll that's similar to the championships awarded in college football today.
It's not.
The Helms Foundation titles were awarded starting in the early 1940s. A committee of so-called experts went back and determined champions from the 1920s and 1930s.
I have no idea who was on the committee, but I know their knowledge of basketball history is not very good. While UNC did go 26-0 and win the Southern Conference championship in Atlanta that season, the White Phantoms (as they were known) were strictly a regional phenomenon. They played nobody outside the South.
The problem is that Southern basketball just wasn't very good in that era. UNC found that out a year later when they repeated as Southern Conference champions, but ventured north and lost three straight -- two by lopsided margins -- to Eastern teams.
The best basketball in 1924 was played in the East and Midwest. And what the Helms researchers ignored is that there was a national tournament that season, sponsored by the AAU. Butler, which beat the teams that were perceived as the best in the country, won that event and also claims a 1924 national title.] 2/1/2006 1:45:59 AM |

I got accused of photoshopping a picture I had taken at the Dean Dome that showed the '24 title, this was before their title last year. 2/1/2006 2:20:50 AM |

God fucking almighty. Why do my fellow State fans do this kind of crap?? Who gives a flying fuck what those faggots down the road on 15-501 (either one of them) do to make themselves look better? Christ. Does this affect us in any way? Do recruits see that 1924 banner and pick them because of it? No they don't give a shit so neither should we.
NC State is a Top 20 program perennially now and we have a solid recruiting base and some of the best fans in the country. Who gives a shit what UNC or Duke does to celebrate their past? How does this matter. I swear you kids are some of the most obsessed, jaded people I've ever seen. More and more it seems like some sort of stupid and unfounded jealousy.
Don't get me wrong it's great to hate teams. I certainly hate Duke but I'm not going to obsess over every little thing that they do to promote themselves. Hating UNC is something State fans are supposed to do. But this constant 'us against the world' ludacris conspiracy theory shit is fucking annoying and makes 'normal' State fans look like jackasses too.
Oh. I'm not mad just felt like typing.

Are we to totally ignore the Carowhina obsession at maintaining their supposed superiority complex? If they weren't such arrogant ego-maniacs who think they're the bestest in the world at EVERYTHING, then maybe others wouldn't have to call them out for their delusion now and then. 2/1/2006 8:49:59 AM |

NyM.... while I do agree that we really shouldn't care... it's quite funny that they have a National Championship Banner hanging for the 1924 "title"
What this article doesn't say is that the founder of the Helms Foundation was originally a Bakery owner from Los Angeles (I shit you not). He had no sporting background and for some reason decided to get into it, created this foundation, and voila.
It's basically equivalent to us claiming a 1973 National Championship, only in 1973.... we really were the best team (okay, 2nd at worst to UCLA). The fact that there's a banner hanging in the Nose Dome is pretty comical

^^We would have beaten UCLA in 1973 as well I believe, because that was basically the same team with same starting 5 as 1974. 2/1/2006 11:05:55 AM |

Speaking of the 73-74 team, what kind of recruiting violations did we have, and who were they against? 2/1/2006 11:39:50 AM |

^^^ David played in a pick-up game vs an assistant coach and some other people before opening of the basketball practice "season". He was already a student @ NCSU at the time.
David spent the night in one of the tri-towers with some friends while being recruited, which was deamed along the lines of having free housing provided.
David got free tickets to a Jackson 5 concert. This one isn't mentioned often.
Duke also got put on probation for recruiting him. One of their boosters gave him a suit. 2/1/2006 2:43:36 PM |

his book was fluff
Sloan's autobiography and Four Corners* by Joe Mezner give a more honest account of what happened.
*great book that covers NCSU, UNC, Duke and WFU 2/1/2006 3:05:19 PM |

it's menzer, he used to guest co-host on "primetime with the packman", a radio show in and around charlotte
i think he does a good job explaining the really older day (read: pre-1980) scene well, but i've read much better stuff on what happened in the acc in the eighties
ps unc sucks
