Quote : | "(January 23, 2006 - New York, New York) – IFC Entertainment announced today the creation of its new distribution banner, IFC’s First Take. Launching in March, the new initiative will look to develop and provide a voice to the many critically acclaimed independent films that are shown in New York, Los Angeles, and various Film Festivals, but lost within the marketplace each year. These films will be specifically distributed both theatrically and On Demand simultaneously, ensuring that each is guaranteed a nationwide release.
Unlike other Day Date concepts, IFC’s First Take will use Video On Demand technology to create the first centralized destination for critically acclaimed independent films. Cable subscribers for the new On Demand service will be able to access two new independent films every month from their digital set boxes on the same day and date as their theatrical release.
To help launch this new initiative, IFC also announced today that it has selected CSA: THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA, executive produced by Spike Lee; I AM A SEX ADDICT, 2005’s Gotham Award winner for Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You; THREE TIMES, named as 2005’s Best Undistributed Film by the Village Voice's National Critics Poll; AMERICAN GUN, starring Donald Sutherland, Forest Whitaker, Marcia Gay Harden; RUSSIAN DOLLS, starring Audrey Tautou; and SORRY, HATERS, starring Robin Wright Penn and Sandra Oh, as the first films to will be distributed Day and Date.
In 2006, IFC’s First Take will look to distribute at least twenty-four Day Date films, with plans to develop a larger annual slate in the future. Additional films for this year will be announced in the coming weeks. This Day Date slate will supplement the traditional release schedule of IFC Films." |

There are plenty of shitty independent releases, but IFC tends to put out some good films. 2/2/2006 1:01:41 PM |

what's the stats on independent films these days- 93% of them suck? or is it 94 2/2/2006 1:06:04 PM |

I'd say it's about the same as mainstream movies. About 90%.
The difference is that the super shitty independent movies rarely go anywhere outside of New York and LA, while Big Mama's House 2 becomes the number 1 film in the country. 2/2/2006 1:10:48 PM |

good heavens that looks stupid.
basically his idea isnt "what if the confederates won?", but "what if we still had slavery?"
because if the south had won, we would not still have slavery. i also dont understand why he suggests all the states became the CSA. if the confederates won, they wouldnt have taken over all the states in the union. they woulda just won the right to be independent.
i guess if you have a camera, you dont have to make sense.
^if its a comedy, than i take it back. you can do whatever you want to get laughs. i could see how it would be trying to get laughs, but i didnt think of spike lee making a pure comedy.

Keep in mind, too, that Spike Lee's involvement is an an executive producer, i.e. his input into the film was getting his name tacked on the poster. 2/2/2006 2:18:09 PM |

I know there had been some talk about theatres getting a better cut on BUBBLE than they typical would have. How did that end up working out?2/2/2006 5:07:10 PM |

^^ Mark Cuban's (the movie's producer) theater chain was the main exhibitor for the film. He owns the HDNet rights, and he basically built a DVD production company to make the product.
i.e. outside of Landmark Cinemas (I think that's what they're called), the exhibitors didn't get a dime. Bubble still did pretty well, though, so I'm not complaining. 2/2/2006 5:09:20 PM |

I guess my question wasn't worded properly. I was asking about payout precentages on box office. One of the concessions made by the distribution company was that theatre chains would payout a smaller percentage than they typically would. Did that end up being the case? Was it a significant enough difference to matter?2/2/2006 5:13:05 PM |

Ah, I gotcha. I don't know off the top of my head what we're paying on it. I'll look into it, though. 2/2/2006 5:43:17 PM |
