Well, I see from your homework score that you persevered! Good Job, "flack magnet"
Sorry I didn't see your post before the due date, but I don't usually expect students to post here since there's a homework communication forum on webassign.
Make me proud tomorrow. 2/8/2006 8:48:38 PM |

Still no green inbox. Ah, well, I'm used to being strange teacher lady. It's a look I now cultivate.
Your homework becomes your curve, when the exam scores get averaged in.
It should be pretty easy to get 100% of the homework, with 5 submissions and counting the best 10/13 assignments. Students usually have a homework average of ~90% by the end of the semester. Exams usually have an average around 70%.
So thats 25% of the grade as homework at ~90% and 75% of the grade as exam/final at ~70%. (0.25 x 90) + (0.75 x 70) = 75% = the usual average for a college-level class. Throw in a little 96th percentile curve (0-3%), and you get a grade distribution very similar to CH201-001 and CH201-002 Spring '05 or Hendrickson's CH201 last semester.
BTW, your scores are up in Webassign and the gradebook updated. The class exam average was a 70.5%. Last year's class made a 71.7% on practice exam 1. Your exam was comparable in length and difficulty to the practice exam.
The number of students that had trouble finishing was surprising to me. I counted the number of calculations in practice exam 1 and came up with 21. I counted the number of calculations in this semester's exam and came up with 20, if you really insist on counting the pithy first question. This year's exam 1 seemed slightly shorter to me. If you felt it was more difficult or longer than the practice, that wasn't intentional.
Well, I guess you'll know for exam 2. There will be fewer questions, but they get more complicated. It does seem to me that last year's students had an easier time finishing exams 2 and 3. That may just be because they started studying in such a way as to pull up the formula and method quicker out of their brains.
Have a good weekend, rest your brain from CH201, and we'll get back to work on Tuesday for the next round.
P.S. (Most of my students did make me proud. You took a hard exam and even if you didn't dominate, you fought bravely.) 2/11/2006 8:26:48 PM |
