We are seeming to have quite a bit of trouble with this diffusion theory program that calculates the multiplication factor. If there is anyone who can help us or provide an example of what they used to do this project please reply; there will be monitary reimbursment.

ahahahahahaha

how many nuclear engineers do you think you're gona get here?

and yes, the project is a bitch. I think you have a pretty detailed discription of how to do it though. i think. i had problems but might be able to help you build it. To be honest, when i did it, i got it built and then the flux went negative in places, but then it showed other attributes that looked like they were hitting. i spent hours going over what looked to be exactly what the instructions were and wound up turning in an outright wrong program.

Just make sure you have something, even if it's wrong. Do you best and ask the teacher lots of questions, that's all they want.

I think its insane that we are expected to be able to program on this level. I want to be a nuclear engineer, not a CSC, and I don't give a damn about the coding for crap that will predict nuclear shit b/c that's not were I want to take my major. Doster has the idea by giving an acual introductory type fortran assignment whereas Anistratov assumed for us to be CSC double majors. I understand the nuclear side of this crap, but am utterly lost when it comes to making a code that will turn my concepts into code.

Just out of curiosity, how many lines did it take you to complete the project? How many computer assignments does anistratov assign, b/c if they are only 5% of our final grade, I am almost more than willing to just half ass this crap and aim for about 2.5%, as if that would actually have any effect on the final grade. Thanks for you time/help!

I was in the same class as ^^ and have about the same feelings about it. I ended copying the text of his handout right to code and it worked almost perfect. If you have some problems with it or have some output I could check over it and see if it similar to what I got. Other than that good luck with it.

^This past summer I used FORTRAN a good bit at my internship. Not codeing diffusion eq though.

I'm a Fortran TA, I can help you with the coding part of it if you want. If you know exactly what you need the program to do, come by my office hours in DAN226 on Thursday 1:15-3:15 and I will see what I can do to help.

^^^ given just the materials you have for the project, a CSC major isn't going to be able to do that. It would depend on the CSC major, some who do it with physics work would have a good shot at it, but for someone who does software, they're not gona be able to make a diffusion code for a 1D reactor. But then you're also going need to understand materials, economics, thermo out the ass, and a bagillion other things to work in a serious nuclear engineering position.

Three pieces of advice:

1) Try talking to some of the graduate students about the project, especially those that went through the major at NCSU. They might have some hints, or notes, that you will find useful.

2) Talk to Anistratov and Doster. You may find it hard to believe at this point in the semester, but they are nice guys.

3) Write out the algorithm first, and then try to write the code.
