is there some way to check the code for this without going to the dealership?

can autozone scan the airbag module?

well.... if the airbag module is on, i would suspect the airbag...

ive read a lot of stuff that says it could be the seatbelt buckle.. or it could be the airbag module or actual bag itself...

i just want to know if there is a cheap & easy way to tell what it is without having to spend $100 to get a diagnosis.

you cant check that with the obd port on most, you have to use the manufacturers diagnostic port, and no autozone cant do that

if it's just a fluke and nothing is wrong you can use the mes connector to reset it.....search for reset sequence....just uses a paper clip and go through some sequence

i know i can reset it. i found the sequence with google last night..

but i'm assuming that there is an actual problem. i did read that the seat belt buckle will cause it (and is a common failure), and the alternator for some reason (if the battery voltage drops too low).

i know with VWs, a company (ross-tech) makes a vag-com which you can use to check fault codes in all of the obd2 modules (including SRS), clear the codes, adjust certain parameters, and data log sensor outputs.

i think my question was: is there something like the vag-com for hondas, or does the car need to be taken to the dealership to find the fault code?

if your seatbelts are SRS and shit. then take your door panels off and check the mechanism and make sure the plug is secure. for both sides.
check under your seat and make sure the buckle SRS connector is also secure.

then check make sure your driver and pass. airbag connectors are good. then check the airbag controller and make sure all the plugs are good.

air bags are supposd to be checked out by a prof. when they are 10 years old.....so it's getting about that time anyway

you need so much voltage to fire the pyrotechnic charge to fill the bag

my undrerstanding here

the way the system works is the module monitors several sensors. a certian number of sensors all have to be triggered at the same time or the module wont fire the airbag. of course wether or not anyone is properly restrained in the seat (belt sensor or seat switch) is a factor as well. if one of the sensors is tripped and none of the other one are, then it lights to show a fault. many independant shops with the proper equipment can scan it for you, or of course the dealership can.

can you recommend a shop? it would be best to not have to shell out the $texas to go to the dealership...

maybe zxappeal knows of a shop...

get out your phonebook and start calling. TAO should have the equipment, but a diagnostic fee for the scan will likely be cheaper at a lesser known place.

yes, but it's out of the price range for most people and small shops. i forget what it's called. i think snap-on makes something honda approved.
