Setting themselves up to trade for Rivers!!! Woot!

"Injuries to Pennington prompt Jets to try to adjust termsESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- The New York Jets are attempting to renegotiate the contract of quarterback Chad Pennington, who missed much of the last two seasons because of an injured throwing shoulder.

As first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Sunday, the Jets asked Pennington to take a pay cut to a $1 million base salary with incentives that would compensate for the remaining $8 million the team owes him.

These are more than routine steps to get under the salary cap by March 3, the first day of free agency, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations are ongoing. Rather, they are related to the right shoulder injury and questions of whether Pennington's arm will return to full strength.

The Jets will not comment.

Pennington signed a $64 million, seven-year deal two years ago. He is expected to have a salary cap number close to $12 million this season, including a $3 million roster bonus due in March. Even if the Jets cut him, they would take a salary hit of about $10 million because of the prorated salary cap.

Complicating the issue is the lack of an extension to the league's collective bargaining agreement with the players' union. The contract expires in 2008, but 2007 would be an uncapped season, leaving questions about the length and size of deals with free agents.

Pennington hurt his shoulder during the 2004 season, missed three games, then returned for the end of the regular season and into the playoffs. It was clear then that his arm strength was significantly reduced and after the season the team said he would have rotator cuff surgery.

He returned this year but was injured in the third game of the season and again had surgery, missing the rest of the season. The team's problems were compounded when Jay Fiedler, acquired as insurance in the offseason, was injured seven plays after Pennington and also was lost for the season.

That left the Jets with third-stringer Brooks Bollinger and 42-year-old Vinny Testaverde, and the team finished 4-12. After the season, coach Herman Edwards left for Kansas City and Mike Tannenbaum replaced general manager Terry Bradway. "

Man what were the Jets thinking when they gave Pennington a 7 yr $64 million contract? I doubt he'll take too much of a re-structuring unless he really cares for the team and realizes that he hasn't actually earned any of that money the past two seasons.

They were thinking he wasn't going to injure his rotator cuff twice.

^ He never had that much talent to begin with. His arm strength was suspect and it wasn't like he was some dominate college football player with amazing abilities. They fucked up and they know it.

this isnt really setting up a trade for rivers. it helps but the jets are in cap trouble anyway and need this to happen no matter what they do at qb. they dont want to pay pennington top dollar when is arm is torn up completely and may not have anything left in it.

IF Jets get Rivers, the Jets will have:

P. Rivers
J. Cotchery
A. Maddox
(with the 4th pick in the draft, maybe Mario Williams)

Along with some other young promising tallent, like:
J. Vilma
M. Nugent

Jesus christ no, don't let this happen.

The Jets are the 2nd rate team in a 2nd rate market.

there is an espn article that pretty much says...

a) brees' injury is too bad, they will trade him and keep rivers

or

b) they will keep brees and try to get the most money they can out of rivers.

Seems as if rivers will go somewhere else, and if not he'll get some playing time as a starter

they will Rivers as leverage over Brees during his negotiations, so until Brees gets locked up, Phil isn't going anywhere

I realize how vague this may sound, but I read an article recently where an un-named Chargers official said that no matter how many rumors are floating around, Philip Rivers will be in San Diego in 2006.

How so? I mean the White Sox are a second rate team from a fan interest stand point. The Jets have been far more succesful the last 5 years then the Giants. 2nd rate market just makes zero sense considering it is the largest in the country.

Jets have a waiting list 8,000 deep for tickets..

nail = head

they are just setting up for the Brees K negotiations; to not at least consider moving Rivers this offseason, if they could fill a needed hole would be assanine

it seems like the bolts really arent going to trade phil, as somebody else said they have been pretty adamant about not trading him. plus the financially it would be hard to work a deal to trade him

Exactly, it is becoming clearer that the Chargers have ruined Rivers pro career and he will have a career more along the lines of Heath Shuler than one akin to Peyton Manning
