We're getting it in, I believe, two weeks.

As for "all that bollywood horseshit", one of the eight films we are playing is a bollywood film, which is pretty much par for the course. We generally have one of our six screens playing an Indian film. I'm getting sick of the conception that all we play is bollywood movies. The News and Observer, NBC 17, and NPR in the past week have all implied that we mainly show Indian films. I'm fucking sick of it.

Psst! The Colony has two screens!

But yeah, the Colony / Rialto are good people. I have no shit to talk about them.

btw, right now Galaxy Cinema is playing:

Mrs. Henderson Presents
The White Countess
Ballets Russes
Imagine Me and You
Transamerica
Pride and Prejudice
Capote
Rang De Basanti

Yeah man, it's only the largest film industry in the world. Screw them! I'm an American, and I only like American things!

Plus I hate subtitles? Who wants to read when they go to a movie?

I love Michael Bay!!!!!111onehundredeleven.

Touchy are we? I actually love foreign films, three of my top 5 favorite movies are subtitled and foreign. Das Boot, and Ikiru, and Ran. So you can take that avenue and shove it up your ass.

I can't help the fact that those Bollywood releases look and sound ridiciulous in this current time and age. Wonder why they don't get pub and acclaim in the western world? Or why they don't translate to the general film appreciating public over here or in Europe on the whole(indie and otherwise). Wonder why even educated movie-goers couldn't name any one of them if you tried?

Well let me answer you man - it's because they suck. Their pictures have very little to do with universal appeal or wordly view. It's all internal culture pictures and half the time it's gaudy and ridiculous looking. Even if you do pile billions of indians into the theatre and create a large industry.

Don't get mad at me b/c your beloved theatre totes them around and you are a fresh convert, all chippy and afficiando'd. Don't pull that on me.

I'm not a big bollywood fan, to be honest, but there are a decent number of American fans of the genre and these people come out to see something every week. I know, in the end, it just comes down to taste, but for what it's worth our Bollywood fans include NCSU film professors and local newspapers' film critics. There's plenty of crappy Bollywood movies out there. There's plenty of American movies that suck, too. I don't know if you've noticed, but the motherfucking Pink Panther is #1 at the box office this week.

Oh yeah, but they do plagiarize the shit out of stuff. Very few of the Bollywood remakes are licensed because of the lax enforcement of foreign copyrights in India. We had a movie called Zinda a few weeks back, that, swear to god, was a Bollywood remake of Oldboy.

No, I didnt know that was current #1...that's sad. Yes, the majority of movies suck and I hate 65% of the movies out at any given time. That being said, there is usually 1-2 new ones a month I enjoy given the entire field (and some movies that never make it on screening here).

And as far as professors and film critics...not a suprise....something even slightly subversive, foreign, and indie/not mainstream (here) they eat up with two forks. But in the end it's just a trendy thing, and there's a reason you don't see a bollywood flick come over here and stick to the board for longer than a piss moment and/or dial up any fanbase. When it happens, I'll stand corrected.

I've seen it. It is... different. Not in a bad way, mind you, just in a way that a lot of people will have absolutely no understanding of what's going on in the movie. (I appreciate this since most movies made in the USA nowadays are targeted towards complete idiots.) It is extremely beneficial to watch it, and then go look up info online about the books to get a greater insight into the story and the significance of many of the characters. (There are apparently some tremendous differences between the movie and the book.) I would not suggest reading all about it before you go see the movie, though - it's a lot more entertaining to try to figure it out for yourself.

I will say this, though. Whenever you see everything surrounding a character start to go black, they are on the edge of something called the Gloom. They don't explain this very well in the movie at all, and this is one of the key plot points which will need a better explanation afterwards. It is very important to understanding the differences in affiliation between some of the characters!

After seeing it and reading up on it, I will absolutely go see the next two movies. I am extremely curious to see how the story will ultimately play out.

It had surprisingly high production values, namely with impressive CGI and atmospheric cinematography. Although it has its slow points, it's a story which I absolutely want to see all 3 chapters of. You'll most likely feel that way too after you see the movie and then go read up a bit about it.

The News and Observer did an article because Rang De Basanti has been super busy. Somebody at NBC 17 "discovered" us via N&O article and wanted to do a story on the news. NPR had a thing about the Ms. Film Festival and they talked about women in film in Bollywood. Maria Pramaggiore gave us a big plug, which kicked ass.

Wikipedia to the rescue.

Here's the link to info about the book.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Watch_%28Russian_novel%29

And here's the link to info about the movie. This also details information about the differences between the two. Be forewarned, there are some spoilers here - ESPECIALLY in the "Major Differences" section.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Watch_%28Russian_novel%29

I'd suggest reading the first link and not the second if you only want a better explanation of who everyone is and how they are affiliated.

holy shit - that's probably the coolest movie trailer i've ever seen
i bet if you played the trailer in slow motion, you'd practicaly see every key scene in the whole film.
i'll go see this for sure - i'm sold.

oh wait - will it have subtitles?

yes, chickenhead, it will.
but someone on imdb said this about them:

Quote :
"The subtitles are fantastic - dissolving into water, glowing red when vampires are speaking, flying across the screen when someone yells, flickering in and out when the speaker is on the brink of unconsciousness, being revealed by moving objects in the film frame... the only thing I'd fault them for is being SO cool that they kind of distract at times. "

^ yeah thats my favorite song by them, one of my favorite instrumental songs of all time actually.

It really lends an epic feel to the movie, just goes to show you how damn powerful a soundtrack is. Yep...wow!

Yeah, the trailer is amazing, but this movie left me very disappointed. I thought it left much unexplained and the trailer built it up so much only to have it be so slow paced. I'm hoping the rest of the series comes out well and I really want to find some subtitles for Day Watch so I can watch that one

saw this tonight. i enjoyed it a lot. some parts are a tad corny, but considering the movie is borderline horror, only being a tad corny is way above average. you can definitely tell it is only 1 part of the story, as it builds up a lot but doesn't have a big conclusion, only a small one. hopefully the movie is popular enough that the other parts get released here.

I just finished seeing it and really really liked it. I was surprised, because most of the people I'd talked to had more lukewarm feelings about it than I have. A few parts were lame, but it wasn't bad at all for a movie like this. The production design was great, and I wish more filmmakers would be so creative with their production design and visual effects. Can't wait to see the rest of the trilogy.

"Best movie out of Mother Russia Ever!

This movie is pretty awesome. Imagine if someone took THE MATRIX, UNDERWORLD, and a hint of STAR WARS and mixed it all together, this is exactly what you would get. I know what you’re thinking, but it’s actually pretty good. The previews made it out to look a little better than it actually was….but it’s still worth watching. As long as you don’t mind reading a movie you will like this. I even had to pay to see this one! It was worth it. The acting was pretty good, directing was superb, the music and editing was fairly exciting. There are some cheesy cliche parts in this movie, but the pretty visuals more than make up for it. I wish there were more of them (like the preview may suggest) but this movie has lots of eye candy…very artisitic, even the subtitles get creative.

This is part of the trilogy, I believe the second is already playing in Russia now and the third is filming. I can’t wait to find out how it all unfolds.

Check your local art houses and find out where it’s playing. Currently (3/7/06) In the Raleigh area you can catch it at the Galaxy in Cary and at the Colony, I recommend the Galaxy.
WORTH WATCHING

it was ok...
but odd...
they telegraphed a lot of the plot points, like i just kept waiting for them to go ahead and reveal what was already blatantly obvious...
and they kinda hammer home the "moral" a little too hard... like someone was yelling "HERE COME'S THE POINT!!!" for the last few minutes...

but i'll probably go see the second one anyway... cuz at least it didn't have all the overacting that comes with american attempts at similar movies

i enjoyed it too but i almost nodded off at one point. it just drags on for a bit but all-in-all, well worth the price of admission.
