Look at the way the giants are constructed this year, they are built for one more run with barry, then dont be surprised when they get torn up and attempt to rebuild.

Clearly, one of the most dominant baseball players of all-time.

He used steroids, no doubt.

Like 30-60% of the rest of Major League Baseball players did.

But his numbers were so far above everyone else's it shouldnt affect his legacy any really...

On the other hand, a guy like Rafael Palmeiro should never make the HOF.

^ yeah right. Some of (if not THE) greatest offensive numbers of all-time and we're gonna keep him out of the HOF?

Why, because he was sometimes mean to reporters? Give me a break.

You cant keep him out of the HOF on the speculation that he used steroids.

If you're gonna subject Bonds to that speculation, make sure you argue against Thome, Bagwell, Frank Thomas, Sosa, etc too....

99% of voters realize he was on the juice

if raffy doesn't make it, then neither should bonds

and he's an asshole, re: jim rice

---

sosa won't get in

neither will thome

bagwell is borderline

and who the hell thinks thomas was on roids

Raffy failed a drug test and lied under oath.

Thats a huge difference from speculation that Bonds may have used steroids.

Bonds woulda been a HOF'er without the roids anyway... he was a dominant player for his entire career essentially.

Sosa wont get in? Based on numbers he'd be an easy selection... Im just saying if you wanna argue against Bonds you better argue against every other person who may have been on steroids.

Why couldnt Thomas have been on roids? his body broke down like a steroid user... since we're speculating about Bonds, why cant we speculate about Thomas?

Not every steroid user looked like Bonds or Giambi. For every Bonds there were three Brett Boones.

Raffy was unintentionally set up and then took the fall for the Baltimore organization.

Think about it. If Raffy is busted, oh well. Older player, no harm to the team. If Miggy is implicated, the team is set back even further than it already is. Now, Raffy came out and said "Yo, i dint take nuffin but B-twell from Miggy" and the O's Front office says "oh... shit."

then the comes the cover-up, throwing raffy under the bus, and everything. Tejada even asked to leave after that. Get outta town while the pressure is building. Plus his numbers post-Raffy-debacle were a far cry from before that.

As far as Bonds, who gives a shit.

i still cant believe they withheld the positive test results for that long just so he could get his 500 HR.

EIther way, Raffy is just as big of an asshole as Bonds...

that must be a joke, his main reason for getting in would be the homers and the on base percentage that was genrated by the HR's

^ that is jsut stupid.

Look at his fucking stats.

You do realize that 37 HR in the early 90's put him among the league leaders right?

N/m how can I expect you guys to understand this stuff... you were 5 years old.

I cant GUARANTEE he woulda been a HOF'er without steroids or anything... and you're right i cant pinpoint the exact date he started using them.

But if everyone else was using them too, and his numbers are leaps and bounds beyond EVERYONE else's.... its pretty clear it wasnt just the steroids.

He put up amazing numbers for 20 years. It's tough to argue with the legitimacy of his career.

It might be unfair to compare him with different eras (b/c of the steroid boost), but its not unfair to compare him with his peers.

sosa never met a pitch he didn't like.

or a corked bat.

he was also king of the clutch strikeout and worthless home run, knocking them out when they're up or down by 7 runs.

I love the arguments against Bonds.

Everyone says he's been on steroids since around the time of the 73 home run season, but realistically no one can prove it. He's just easy to hate because he's an asshole.

rallydurham points out what everyone who has followed baseball for more than 10 years knows: Barry Bonds has been good forever.

Then someone in here goes "maybe he's been taking steroids ever since he was at ASU"

Even though one of the main reasons people use to prove that Bonds is on 'roids is just how big his head is now, compared to then. So that excuse doesn't make sense.

It's like watching people go out of their way to try and justify why one of the best players of the last 20 years shouldn't be in the Hall.

I dont think Bonds is more of a sham than a guy like Brett Boone.

Bonds used steroids to propel himself from being an all-star/perennial MVP candidate to a living legend.

Yes, without steroids Bonds probably wouldnt have produced the greatest offensive stats ever, but he still would have likely been an easy HOF'er.

Now a light hitting guy like Brett Boone used steroids to propel himself from a nobody to an all-star, a $7 million/yr guy instead of a $750,000/yr guy.

Who is more of a sham... the guy who gained 25-30% more pay, 25-30% more HR's, 1-2 more MVP's...

or the guy who gained 1000% more money, 300% HR's, lord knows how many all-star appearances, etc

Bonds used steroids, thats a given.

They werent really completely illegal though according to the rules. They werent tested for for god's sake. Owners, media, fans, etc all looked the other way even though everyone knew what was going on.

I dont consider taking steroids really "cheating" if everyone else was doing it... and 7-8 years ago you didnt consider it cheating either when you were jacking off in your room to pictures of Mark McGwire.

I do think you have to curb the comparisons between Bonds and Ruth and people like that...

But the HOF compensates for eras... and Bonds DOMINATED his era.

Thank you.

Bonds was one of my favorite players, has been since I was about 8 (1989).

and a large part of my admiration for him is the shit he gives to the goddamned media.

I'm fairly certain that if I was in the limelight 24/7, I'd advise reporters to hum my fucking nuts from time to time for their meddling.

ESPNnews reported that last night after the plan that Bonds was going to retire after the 06 season, Bonds stated that he considered that conversation with that reporter what he was feeling that day. He was quoted as saying, "right now I feel like I can play 5-10 more years." Sounds like he was just trying to get up some more beef between him and the press.

Here is why I think Bonds is a dick:

He was a Hall of Famer from the beginning, because I don't think that there has been a player with better hand-eye coordination since Ted Williams. I don't give a shit if he was rude to reporters. Hell, Ted Williams hated reporters, but I think he was awesome. Bonds gets no respect because he used steroids to inflate his power stats. With the exception of the juiced-ball season of 1993, he never hit mroe than 40 HRs before 1996, when he hit 42 (age 32).

Regardless of what you think of Bonds, you have to admit that there's no way in hell he would have 708 HRs at this point in his career if hadn't used steroids.

Fuck him. I hope they intentionally walk him every AB. If I were pitching, and Bonds had 713 HRs, even if the bases were loaded, I would walk that fucker.

Even if he breaks the record, though, no one will remember him in the same way they remember Ruth, Mantle, Aaron, Mays, or Williams.

w/o steriods i think bonds still hits 500 home runs and steals 400+ bases, making him the only player in history to do so. add that w/ 8 gold gloves and i dont see how he doesnt make the hof.

no one has even hit 400 home runs and stole 400 bases, so even if that 500 is generous i still think he makes it.

The only thing anyone remembers about Ruth is that he was a fat drunk who happens to have the second most home runs ever.

Hank Aaron is only remembered because he has the most home runs ever. Otherwise he's pretty forgetable.

i think the biggest beef with a lot of people is, why.

He was already a sure fire hall of famer even if he went 500-400. There was no way he wasn't making it. A lot of people feel he "cheapend" his accomplishments by overinflating his homeruns, and they assume steroids did it.

I love how people bring the 'well Bonds is an asshole' into the argument and then put Ruth, Mantle, and Williams in there.. HELLO!

Ruth - drunken home run hitter who was about as famous for his boozing as his home runs

Williams - probably the single biggest prick to the media in Boston sports history. He once was booed at Fenway and never forgave the fans complaining about them nearly every day..

Mantle - talk about a fucking asshole. His drunken post playing days were some times to forget. He was about the most self-centered person you could possibly imagine and turned off thousands of his former fans who literally idolized him well into their 40s and 50s. If anyone gets a chance to see 'Mantle' on HBO watch it. He saved his legacy by realizing what type of person he became, though too late, and trying to use it for good..

** Oh and just so I'm understood Bonds undoubtedly deserves to be a first ballot HOFer.. period.

and he was equally as famous for his PR and charisma. You can't just ignore the good parts about him because he drank all the time. He was incredible with the fans and a great showman. i'd say more people remerber ruth as the guy with the cigar and crown on his head than as a drunk.

bonds is problem is he's surly. whether you like it or not... same shit happens when NFL hof voting comes up. I still think he'll make the hof but if he doesn't it's because he made the people who vote for it not like him
