I've been looking for several days now on here, google and other places on the differences between the different colors of antifreeze/coolant. What is the difference and can you mix colors? Some sources say yes, some say no. What's the deal? Opinions? My 2000 Range Rover 4.0SE has pink in it now and is a little low. The pink is hard to find at the autostores and those places say sure, mix away. Land Rover of Cary says stay with pink and don't ever ever mix. I'm getting the whole system flushed tomorrow, so adding doesn't matter anymore, but for future reference, it might be nice to know what I can and cannot add to the cooling system. 2/19/2006 8:54:09 PM |

yeah, never mix coolants. i had to flush one of my friends coolant system after her bf topped off her coolant with the wrong one in her saturn. just use whatever the factory coolant is, it sounds like you have already contacted the dealership so just use what they recommended. i personally have never heard of pink coolant, just orange(dexacool or something to that name, been 3 yrs, cant remember) and green. 2/19/2006 8:58:25 PM |

They may sell it as that, but it is BS.

yes GM dexcool will last a LONG time, however it gets FILTHY in the meantime. really nasty. has to be flushed and maintained just as often as regular coolant really. my experience has been if your car was designed for it, it is best to stick with it instead of swapping to regular green.
the special stuff used by, toyota, subaru etc is all different colors but chemically same stuff made by zerex. the vw/audi, volvo, mercedes, and likely rover stuff is different coolants made by different companies.
while the mercedes has a nice "mineral oil" consistancy and goes down smooth, nothing tastes as good as the good old green shit. mmmm hmmmm 2/19/2006 9:30:02 PM |

this thread definitely took a new direction. fuck start, slightly better than a pull start but not as good as a push start. 2/19/2006 10:05:59 PM |

just clear things up i will give you an example of each and then you decide the best one.
fuck start.... it is the process in which my cock enters mattjm's moms mouth rapidly and followed by her starting a rumor to her book club about how good it tastes.
pull start.... the process in which mattjm's boy toy pulls his root to get him out of bed ever morning.
and finally the push start... the process in which mattjm's boy toy plugs his perverbial root in matts mouf to push him out the door for class.
take your pick i prefer the fuck start of matts moms head2/19/2006 10:30:27 PM |

I use Prestone 5yr/50k mile antifreeze or the Advance equivalent in everything now. Both will mix with all types of coolant...both are yellow in color.
The others are all ethylene glycol with differing corrosion inhibitor packages.
Zerex has the red/pink G-05, which is also an extended drain interval coolant. Compatible with Toyota red, Ford, Chrysler, and regular green coolant. Low silicate corrosion inhibitors.
Dexcool is a GM exclusive, and is orange in color. This is the shit that doesn't mix with ANYTHING. Its carboxylate corrosion inhibitors do not respond well to mixing with silicates, and will form a sludgy precipitate in your system if mixed with conventional coolant.
Prestone has an extreme duty coolant for use in fleet/industrial applications (usually with wet liners) where corrosion and cavitation/erosion are problems. It's a nice purple color.
These are the only ones I know for sure (other than plain old green)...others chime in! 2/20/2006 1:40:33 PM |

plain old green with a few ounces of caterpillar corrosion inhibitor every year works for me. not sure if anybody else makes the stuff, i just have an assload leftover from servicing generators. about every 5 years or so i drain it and flush it with water. 2/20/2006 1:44:46 PM |

I sell a corrosion inhibitor as well, basically the same stuff as the Cat stuff you're talking about, under the Carquest label. It's used the same way. Big deal on wet liners because of cavitation issues. 2/20/2006 2:02:22 PM |

the reason that was so important for the generators is there was 100+ gallons of coolant in some, with a block heater at 150 degrees all the time, so corrosion was a huge issue. 2/20/2006 2:05:34 PM |

Also to add 1 more color to the rainbow, there is Blue. Which is phospate free BMW/VW early spec coolant. It can be mixed with the green with no issues 2/20/2006 3:56:34 PM |
