i call the sound "jarbled demons" and it scares me. is this a codec problem?

It would be weird that it's a codec problem...

Try reinstalling Quicktime. And make sure that your soundcard drivers are up to date.

everything is shipshape with QT and card drivers.

ytmnd.com is the only site i've ever encountered this sound with.
