it's about man's reliance on tools to progress. at the end of the movie man evolves into a higher being for which tools are unnecessary.

that was the point. kubrick wanted to make a film to counter hollywood's dramatization of space. he wanted to show how boring it can be.

I'd only read the book if there's an 80 page monkey scene.

it's a big metaphor for false flag operations and how entertainment and news media is used to condition us and form public opinion.

For the longest time I had watched the film and the last 15 minutes were the biggest 'WTF IS HAPPENING?' then he turns into the Star-Child and I'm even more 'WTF!?' Then I read the book and I was like "ooooooooooooh"

2010 was really good too.

2061 was very meh.

I'm currently reading 3001.

the novel was actually published after the film, but it was originally based arthur c. clarke's short story, the sentinel and clarke worked on the novel as kubrick was filming. the film was meant to be it's own story though, there's a lot that the novel does not explain. kubrick had said that the true meaning of 2001 was visually encoded to bypass the conscious rationalizations of the audience and sink straight into the unconscious. there's a lot that clarke just wasn't able to explain

this is a nice re-score though

^ I believe Kubrick and Clarke wanted the movie and the book to be released simultaneously, but there were some problems in the publishing process and the book got delayed a year or so. Clarke wrote it out in the forward of the 2001 edition of the book

read the book

kubrick, like any other movie he touched, turned the movie into a steaming pile of elephant shit that sucked it hard
