so I got an ipod as a gift this christmas and i decided to give itunes a try, one problem though I've been having is being able to change the id3 tags easily. On some songs not all I'll do as itunes tells me to and will right click on the song, then get info, then info, here I can add albam info/ artist/ etc. but on some songs its all grayed out and I cant change anything? how do I fix this ,, end goal is I want all my songs of a certian artist to be displayed under that artist on the ipod. 2/24/2006 2:01:31 AM |

You should be able to select all the songs at once that belong to the artist, do control-i and then just click the checkbox for "artist" and "album" or whatever, and edit it.
I've never seen iTunes have a grayed out song in iTunes.
Also, if you're ripping the songs from CD, just set it to get the tracks from the CDDB, and when you rip the CD, it will be already tagged. 2/24/2006 2:13:45 AM |

The guy is trying to select the songs on the ipod and not modify them in his music library.
Click on "Library" instead of "Joe Smith's Ipod"
The songs are accesible there. 2/24/2006 6:40:52 PM |

Is the iPod connected during this process?
Do you have iTunes set to sync automatically? If the answer is yes, then set the songs up in iTunes how you like, WITHOUT the iPod connected, then when you are done, connect the iPod.
If you have iTunes set to manually manage the iPod, connect the iPod, then when the iPod shows up in iTunes, set the songs how you like. 2/26/2006 3:21:32 AM |

at the time no the ipod is not connected I keep it set to manually manage. it seams like its only the songs that I had downloaded through p2p programs in the past , and not the ones i've imported from cds. I tryed the convert id3 tag but it is like no. 2/26/2006 10:22:40 AM |

Is there any way you can post a screenshot of the grayed out songs that you can't edit?
Also, are the songs that you downloaded mp3s? And, are you using the latest version of iTunes? 2/26/2006 4:46:05 PM |

ok well if i convert them to mp3 in itunes it works and i can edit them, whats still confusing though is I thought alot of them were already in mp3 format, when I click options it says mpeg-1, layer3 under format. 2/27/2006 12:22:10 AM |
