Quote :
"(CBS) It was the stuff of Hollywood, but it was real.

Senior Jason McElwain had been the manager of the varsity basketball team of Greece Athena High School in Rochester, N.Y.

McElwain, who's autistic, was added to the roster by coach Jim Johnson so he could be given a jersey and get to sit on the bench in the team's last game of the year.

Johnson hoped the situation would even enable him to get McElwain onto the floor a little playing time.

He got the chance, with Greece Athena up by double-digits with four minutes go to.

And, in his first action of the year, McElwain missed his first two shots, but then sank six three-pointers and another shot (video), for a total of 20 points in three minutes.

Good stuff.

Thanks for posting this. There was a period of time when one of my cousins was suspected of being autistic and so many people in my family were bent on having him labelled that they were ignoring his talents.

i'm sure this story will get around in the autism community, how encouraging is that for other people with autism? What a great story!

Here's some follow up on the story

http://tinyurl.com/gohkb

could make himself some $texas!
Quote :
"Twenty-five film companies and publishers have bombarded him with offers, starting with the basketball superhero Earvin "Magic" Johnson, who instantly saw Oscar potential in the story of a boy who through courage and determination beats the odds. Johnson is now in a bidding war with, among others, Oprah Winfrey."

And I thoroughly enjoy the journalistic liberty the reporter took in the 2nd paragraph below
Quote :
"President Bush is hoping to stake a claim to Jason's triumph. On Tuesday, when the President makes a rare trip through upstate New York, he will present an award to the teenager.

Mr Bush hopes that being photographed with Jason will help his sinking approval ratings, now at an all-time low."

you, apparently do not know anyone that is autistic.

its one thing to be lucky enough to be a functioning autistic, but to be able to participate and succeeded in something like this (basketball) is pretty amazing.

i have known several autistic people and it can be a sad disorder to have.

i have never met one of the geniuses though.....like rain man

i know someone who is autisic and functions quite well as a human being, i am no DR but i am sure there is different levels of autism, some are worse than others, i dunno

but obviously this kid isnt that bad off, but everyone wants to make him out to be some fucking completely retarded kid cause it makes for a good story and people can make money off it

^^ no, I see where he's coming from. n/m - this is where i'm coming from then....

Is it great and wonderful that this kid overcame his personal and society's obstacles and accomplished something no one thought possible? Absolutely - i thought it made a great story and the video is truely touching.

But is it something worthy of national attention for 3 weeks, movie offers by Magic Johnson, and a trip from the damned President? Sorry, but no, not really. This is something that could be celebrated with his family and friends and support of his town, but it's not necessary of a national media event.

it really is too bad the vets of many of our wars from times past never got the same recognition when they came back to the country as this kid does by playing in a b-ball game

I LOVE special children. I coached various sports (including basketball) for a few years in high school for Special Olympics, and we had some autistic kids-they are exceptionally awesome in my eyes. I really miss coaching and wish I had time to do it now for Wake county, but I just can't. Maybe after graduation.
