anyone know what the cheapest rally tires are? something in a gravel/dirt/mud tread. i've found kumhos for 60-70 bucks apiece, but cheaper is always better...

yes. i need something with a decent tread no bigger than 26-27 inches at most. rally tires are the obvious choice since there aren't any LT offerings for a 13" rim.

i'm allowing myself this one mod on the subaru before taking it to uwharrie and elsewhere. more for safety/convenience than anything. the current street tires are nearly bald w/ thin sidewalls, and i hate changing tires on the trail (or anything for that matter).

try finding rims in a subaru 4 lug pattern. the only stock vehicles that carry it are pugeots, and you can imagine how common those are. one or two aftermarket companys make them, but they're not cheap.

6x5.5 steel rims can be drilled to work (2 holes match up, so you just have to drill 2 more) but i haven't been able to find any cheap enough for my liking.

on top of all that, it's hard to find an a/t or m/t small enough if you even can. even a 27" swamper would require a lift and mild trimming. you might be able to get away with stock and heavy cutting depending on rim backspacing, but i doubt it. i'm sure as hell not going through all that for a number of reasons.

hey ivan what is the deal w/ the rear diff in that thing. A guy once told me that on those old subaru's w/ hi/low range that the rear axle had no differential, it was like it was locked all the time since the car was predominately fwd.

Is your's like that or does it have a differential in the back?

if it's for a rally, why not get some used/retreads? you're gonna toss after each rally right? or atleast on a quick interval.

you guys are stupid

he got a old ass subaru and he is going to take it to ureannis. only thing he is gonna do is put different tires on it.

that being said, i have had one of those old subarus off road in deep shit and pulled myself out with the lil old all season tires. you dont need and rally tires. if you do want somethign see about some 13in snow tires, that ought to work.

tawaitt the rear might stay locked all the time, i know at highway speeds in 4wd it feels mighty scary

it has a conventional rear diff. irs. flange style driveshaft connecting it to the trans. trans houses the high/low range gearsets and front diff. when it's in 2wd, it's just fwd. when it's in 4wd, it's got a locked center diff just like a truck would. there is no awd setting. some models got awd, with push button center diff lock. no low range.

i do plan to rally it should the oppurtunity arrise, such as the THSCC events. not much else around to do though. i'll mainly be playing with it at various mild 4 wheeling spots, the obx, etc. then likely throwing it in the demo derby come fall.

you gonna swap to a newer powerplant? the little carbed sewing machine motor with the spare tire aircleaner wont be much fun in competition

hell no, bastard only cost me $100. it won't be any worse than the other econoboxes out there, and actually should have an advantage with the 1.5:1 low range. it does bring new definition to the word slow, but torque isn't bad.

some people do ej22 swaps in them, but that's more money/time than i care to spend on the POS.

i would have bought that justy a while back until i found out it was really a suzuki.

although there is a guy somewhere who heavily cut up a justy to fit in a wrx drivetrain.

yeah, 3 cylinder junk. most "purists" don't even consider the justy a real subaru.

i heard the same tale from the guy i bought this one from. he claimed it's in virginia somewhere.
