"AP: Video Contradicts Bush Katrina Statements

POSTED: 3:10 pm MST March 1, 2006
UPDATED: 3:47 pm MST March 1, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Four days after Hurricane Katrina hit, President George W. Bush declared, "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees" in New Orleans.

But video of pre-storm briefings, and transcripts of those briefings, reveal that there was, in fact, plenty of talk about that possibility. And Bush was among those who were worried about it.

The video and the transcripts have been obtained by The Associated Press.

They reveal that a top hurricane expert voiced "grave concerns" about whether the levees would withstand the powerful storm."

UPDATED: 6:47 pm MST March 1, 2006

WASHINGTON -- New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said he had a "sinking feeling" after seeing video of President George W. Bush and key administration officials being warned of the catastrophic damage Hurricane Katrina could produce.

The videotape, obtained by The Associated Press, shows Bush and top officials were warned that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers.

Nagin, who watched the tape on a reporters' camera, recalled that federal officials blamed a "learning curve" for their slow response. But Nagin said the officials were apparently "fully aware."

Homeland Security officials have said the "fog of war" blinded them early on to the magnitude of the disaster.

Former Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown blamed "a fog of bureaucracy.""

To me, what you first posted and and the link contradict themselves. The former makes it sound like bush was worried, but the link (to the AP) says that they still didnt act and allowed nature to take its course. Am I missing something?

if he was worried it showed he understood the serious nature of the problem

... and still failed to act on it

it just makes it more condemning

Plus, a few days after Katrina he claimed that no one could have known that the levees were going to fail.

Apparently he knew.

It doesn't count as lying unless it was done under oath.

Good find, AP, but let's face facts. You could broadcast a video of the president strangling 7 consecutive infants to death, crushing the throats of newborn puppies with his feet, shooting a preacher in the face with a shotgun, smearing feces on the Bible, and burning the original copy of the Constitution with a Zippo lighter...and it still wouldn't matter.

Seriously though what could Bush have done even if he had known they would break?

Most of the dumb niggers didn't get out anyhow so what makes you think a Bush Presidential warning would make them leave?

was he under oath when he said that?

The AP, tell a false story? Say it ain't so...

Quote :
"Clarification: Katrina-Video story
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) _ In a March 1 story, The Associated Press reported that federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees in New Orleans, citing confidential video footage of an Aug. 28 briefing among U.S. officials.

The Army Corps of Engineers considers a breach a hole developing in a levee rather than an overrun. The story should have made clear that Bush was warned about floodwaters overrunning the levees, rather than the levees breaking.

The day before the storm hit, Bush was told there were grave concerns that the levees could be overrun. It wasn't until the next morning, as the storm was hitting, that Michael Brown, then head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Bush had inquired about reports of breaches. Bush did not participate in that briefing. "
