As a senior I figure I should get this straight. What would ya say, exactly, that they do here? Is there a place that gives a general idea or can someone put down some bullet points or something?3/1/2006 8:52:38 PM |

right, except no one in that whole thread actually says anything about what they DO...
I mean I understand they talk a lot and try to pass the "bills" they make, but they've got to have some sort of effect on campus.
Or is it just like the senate at high school, all for show? (except for the people in it)
^so they are there just to kick out a sbp they dont like?

the senate only wastes time & money... they should be disbanded or become a lobbying group for student rights towards the administration.

Well different sections of SG have different responsibilities...Executive plans and coordinates campus events and certain student services, communicates with the Board of Trustees and with NCSU Administration (of several departments), plans and implements Elections, advocates for students on several issues like tution and the occasional controversial thing (like the housing ordinance or nuisance party ordinance) and is responsible for a very large amount of money that is used to support those events and tasks. Executive officers have more specific tasks but all of those are pretty obvious when you think about it. Treasurer handles the money, SG Pres oversees Executive and is a liaison to the BoT, SS Pres oversees Senate, etc...
Judicial works with the office of student conduct and assists with hearings, and not much else that I'm aware of.
Senate is more or less supposed to be the voice of the student body. They spend a large amount of time governing themselves through rule changes and government bills, but they also issue resolutions on certain issues, ranging from praising a coach and/or team to telling the chancellor he/she did a bad thing. Senate committees deal with issues like ticketing, campus diversity, academic integrity, housing, dining, etc. Some of those committees duplicate responsibilities that Executive has.
I've probably forgotten or ommitted a lot, but I'd say that's the gist of it.
I'd say the short version is that SG is a lot of petty bullshit that's responsible for a large amount of money, but they do *some* things right. Do they do anything? Yes, they do a whole fucking lot. Are students empowered by it? No, not really. Amused or annoyed? Sure. Empowered? No. 3/1/2006 10:25:04 PM |

Some of the senators do good things behind the scenes, working directly with university administrators or other groups.
The senate itself is pretty useless. 3/1/2006 10:33:30 PM |

Well, no. They're responsible for WAY too much money to just shrug them off and say "it means nothing it's all just for show". 3/1/2006 10:42:29 PM |
