Greg Raymer and his stupid ass glasses piss me off. I hate watching any match he is in just because he puts those cheap ass 80s Max Hedburg shades on anytime he's playing a hand.

^^^ lol, Greg Raymer has been beating the games at Foxwoods longer than you've been alive.

Based on his results, and the hundred or so posts Ive read from him I can vouch that he knows a shitload about poker.

Televised poker might make someone look like a "calling station" because you never really understand the blind structure, stack sizes, pot odds at the time of the play...

Even when this information is available on tv, it is often estimated or jsut made up entirely by ESPN.

the big thing with the tv poker is that they dont show every hand... just the "exciting" ones, or ones where someone goes out, or makes a big move etc. So if you havent played a lot of poker it looks like everyone is a calling machine and everyone hits some crazy hand every damn deal

Well, you are wrong.

There are several hands where ESPN has made up figures and/or hole cards.

This is common knowledge and has been discussed frequently on most poker boards.

98% of the hole cards are not falsified...

the pot and stacks sizes on the other hand are usually estimated by PA's.

Not the ones at the final table, but the ones midway through the tournament are

Yeah, Raymer is very solid.

Moneymaker on the other hand, I would play him heads up for my life's savings.

^ Well he practically bankrupted himself within a year of winning the WSOP.

No need to envy Moneymaker, he went from leading a normal life to becoming a leech.

The thing about 95% of poker players is that no matter how much money they make at one level, they always want to see if they can take it to the NEXT level.

Eventually they either reach a point where they can no longer beat the game, or they play above their bankroll (flirting with risk of ruin) and go broke.

In Moneymaker's case he hit a big score, suddenly thought he was a "good" poker player and proceeded to blow through everything.

The thing about tournaments is a few lucky breaks here and there can make anyone look like a superstar. Even if he has some discernable poker skills, its nearly impossible to make a lot of money playing live tournaments without being independently wealthy or having a backer.

the trick is to be marketable. hellmuth hasn't won shit in a while, but he's such an icon because of his past success and personality. he's got endorsements out the wazoo, so he could fuck up for the rest of his life and be set (although i'm sure the bank from 9 wsop titles and countless other money finishes doesn't hurt either)

Right, being marketable is the key.

Think about the reasons all the pros write books and/or give seminars (like the one above) teaching people how to play poker or private lessons.

Why would they want to teach people how to get better? Because they make as much or more money selling the information as they do using it...
