Waited until the last possible minute to start a Java project for CSC216, relied on my l33t h4x0r sk1llz to get it done and submitted in a few hours...

...only to realize about 3 minutes after the submit deadline passed that I accidentally transposed two variable names, which will now cause an ArrayOutOfBounds exception and result in me getting a max grade of 50

This is what I get for not leaving enough time to thoroughly debug every single snippet of code

youre no worse than the groups of coders who put out buggy products whenever they feel like it.

you should have sent an email with the correct code to your TA/professor - they might have given you partial credit since it was only 3 minutes late

you've probably let too much time pass by now, though.

you kids are too lackadaisical about your grades

Yeah, i consider myself a decent programmer, and it took me a good 5 hours to get that program done.

this is the same thing i did for my CSC classes so far. worked easily for both 116 and 216. the best advice i can give you though, is definitely not to do it for 316. i fucked myself and my partner over last semester on a program by doing this.

^^^
I can't really consider myself a good programmer, mostly b/c I write programs like I write papers -- not just bits and pieces at a time, but also completely revising my thesis several times midway through...leaving me with all sorts of early shit that didn't get changed several revisions ago

For the time I spent on that project, I'd venture that 70%ish of it was fixing errors from when I originally did something one way and then changed my mind so it would look more coherent. I should've just just kept the ugly code

Excoriator: I'll keep your suggestion in mind going forward. I had Schwarz for CSC116, so I just accepted as gospel the CSC mantra not to bother if something's not in by the submit deadline

I wish I had written code in 316 like I wrote papers for my history and english classes.

yes, that's probably true, but what's the worst that will happen? the scenario is no risk and all potential reward.

You should listen to this guy. Worst grade whore ECE has seen in decades.

My programming skillz = suck ass. It took me about 12-14 hours to do that thing and it still didn't work quite right.

The best advise imo, is to ignore the impulse to skip the directions. By directions I mean the actual assignment and examples from the book / class.

the maze thing is simple in assembler.

in 316 it was actually pretty challenging.

meaning I had to think about it.

(ask scud about that) haha

ok, I'm interested now. Not having gone to undergrad @ NCSU, I have no idea what you're talking about. could someone elaborate?

Sounds like the same maze problem I had back in 216 years ago where you have to write a program to recursively solve it. I still have problems getting my head around recursion.

i think i did that one like 3-4 years ago now that someone explained it. i recall it not being hard at all though. probably not very efficient either.

Has Miller ever made up any of the projects? It seems like it's always Schwartz, Perry, or Balik making up all the assignments.

you're just mad because I was asking for a couple points back on a test score that already blew your curve out of the water.

Look - I don't mess around in academics - there's no team in college. Either you want the grades or you don't. I studied harder than anyone else and I wanted the test score to be accurate.

Now, when you spend all your time at parties and you score a 73 on the test, I guess those couple points don't make a difference to you. But for me, its personal. Because I took my education seriously.
