so I use bittornado, and I used the feature that downloads one file at a time

a weird thing happened with the MacGyver torrent - I tried to download, but nothing actually downloaded, and yet it was taking up space on my hard drive the size of the full torrent

I don't see how that could happen if the files hadn't actually been downloaded

I previously had 10 GB free, and the torrent was like 8.5 or so, and it was saying that I only had 2 GB left of disk space, but in reality nothing had actually downloaded

not weird. there is a setting on most torrent programs that does this. it sets aside the space on your hard drive for your downloads. this is so when you're like me and have a shitload of torrents going at a time, you don't run out of hard drive space half way through. it's actually pretty handy for big torrents like that, because they will take a few days to finish. that insures that you won't accidentally take up too much space on your hard drive while it's downloading.

if you don't like it you can always turn it off.
