Wow...Detroit 2-stroke. That looks to be a 16V92TT.
It's basically 2 8V92's mated end to end. That's kind of the cool thing about the old Detroit 2-strokes; they are a modular design, and often share components across platforms.
It's really cool, because all you have to do to run them in the opposite direction is to retime the cams. Accessory drives bolt on to either end of the engine.
I was not aware that DDA was still building the 2-strokes, as their NOx emissions are a little on the high side. They are not built for road use anymore, I do know that. 3/8/2006 3:04:53 PM |

cool. i don't really know anything about it. it did have a big "92" on it, so it must be what you're talking about. 3/8/2006 3:33:26 PM |

92 cubic inches per cylinder. So a 16V92 would have a total displacement of 1472 cubic inches or 24 liters. Pretty big, but there are bigger. 3/8/2006 3:41:08 PM |

Those have got to be reman units. Detroit Diesel ain't even marketing US built engines anymore, except for the 60 series. I don't even think they're building 40 or 50 series engines anymore. These are all the four-stroke engines designed in the late '80's and early '90's...
Everything now is MTU...which is German-built.
DaimlerChrysler now owns DDC...and I find that funny, as Detroit started off as a General Motors subsidy. Penske bought them, and now DC has 'em. And US-built engines are being phased out.
Of course, everybody knows that the Krauts have superior Diesel technology... 3/8/2006 7:01:02 PM |

True. The Powerstroke is indeed an International engine. It's the T444E in Navistar-ese.
The big deal is that these are the last three US manufacturers of on-road Diesel engines. Mack is gravitating to Renault and Volvo Truck (owns Mack now; different than Volvo automotive and not owned by Ford)...they're not even US owned anymore. That's kind of scary, as Mack has had a superior in-house engine program for YEARS. It used to be that over 90% of their trucks shipped with Mack engines. Not anymore. So long, Allentown.
And most of the big truck manufacturers are being consolidated and purchased by companies with major interests in overseas diesel manufacturers.
Take a look at Freightliner...almost completely powered my Mercedes-Benz engines now (which makes sense, as FL is now owned by DaimlerChrysler). Sterling is heading that way as well.
We may see Cummins and Caterpillar mostly out of the onroad power market in this decade...they both still have sizeable marine and offroad/industrial interests. 3/8/2006 7:50:13 PM |

^^^ From what I've always heard about Mack, they kind of reminded me of John Deere. Good stuff, but proprietary parts and expensive to work on.
