I know, I know, its Chapel Hill. NCSU is first in my heart though. UNC & I have a sort of love/hate relationship. I don’t know the area very well, I’ve not had many classes over there.

I might be moving there for a couple of years as early as this summer. Does anyone have any recommendations for apartment complexes? Something not terribly far from campus, but it doesn’t have to be on top of campus either... I wont be attending class there, but my roommate would be. Walking distance, busing distance, and reasonable driving distance would be acceptable. I might be looking for a job in the area, so an apartment complex close to possible employers might be good… its really all up in the air at this point, so any advice would be appreciated.

I had a looksee at Sterling Brook and thought it was pretty nice. Not right in the middle of Collegetown, but still close enough that you could conceivably stumble home from Carrboro. It would be a long stumble, though.

my husband and i like where we live a lot. The place is called Camden Governor's Village (just changed names from Summit Governor's Village). It is actually in Chatham county, but it is a great location. My husband works in RTP and it is a 20 min commute for him to work and I am a med student and it takes about 10 min to get to a busline park & ride lot (it would take about the same time to get to campus if you had an on campus permit). Its a nice area, not a lot of partying here as it is mostly grad students and young couples that live here.

Last year I lived at Chambers Ridge Apts in Carrboro. It was a tolerable place to live, though it was poorly insulated to energy costs were insane. Usually a pretty quiet place, though not well lit and made me a bit afraid because of that at night.

Feel free to PM questions. I have friends who have lived in lots of other places too that I might could tell you about.

Ty for the info! If you know the links to any apartments that you know anything about, whether you've lived there are not, feel free to post the links so I can peruse them.

Take a look at Sunstone Apts. They are in very good location, walking distance to banks, post Office, Harris Teeter, University mall, Bus stops, library, and like 3-5 min driving to campus, including the lights. Ohh and you a get a membership to Millenium gym

Walking distance of a grocery store eh? Sounds interesting... I'll have to check it out... does it have a website?

definitely recommend southern village apartments.

http://www.southernvillageapts.com/

fairly new, pretty nice. the neighborhood is fucking awesome, and has won awards. movie theatre within walking distance, buses to campus. not too terribly expensive, and they should be running a special on rent now.

What about non-student areas? My husband and I will be moving back to NC and both of our jobs may be in Chapel Hill.

maybe a few grad students. it is inside a bigger neighborhood with like 500+ pretty nice houses and some townhomes and condos. something like half the people are over 50, and 15% are over 65.

That's my kinda community! After getting my Masters, I certainly don't want to get stuck in a student complex.

Thanks for the info!

the price definitely weeds out the younger students... and theres so much stuff over there, inside the actual neighborhood.... theatre, church, elementary school, grocery store, bank.

hahah its an awesome concept, it was in time magazine and shit. im pretty biased though, thats probably why im advertising it. check it out for yourself though.

An ex of mine lived there a few years ago. It was decent for what he paid. Always quiet, plus has nice closest space

My lease in Raleigh ends next month, and paying month by month is a much higher rate... I might move to Chapel Hill soon and commute to finish out this semester/graduation at NCSU. It’s not a horribly long distance to do over the short term. I’ve had interinstitutional courses at UNC, so I’ve deal with covering that distance while having classes at both universities.

Might even start touring apartments soon. Not getting into grad school was no fun, but atleast I can still get excited about moving

i second the suggestion of sunstone apartments. i lived there my junior and senior years at unc. other students that i ran into were typically grad students or seniors. we never had a problem with noise, and the maintenance people were pretty quick to get things done. the gym membership's good, and the prices are pretty good for the size apartment you get.

Sunstone looks like its in a nice location, but its got the worst ratings of any apartment I've looked into. It seems several people are saying it has bad maintenance, bugs, and noise problems. Noise doesn't bother me so much, but bugs and a poor quality staff would.

you've gotta remember with those ratings sites that the people who are going to report things are those who are not happy with it. generally, the happy people don't feel the need to shout it to the rooftops. that being said, roaches are going to be a problem in nc. not necessarily in the apartments, but out in the walkways. i never encountered anything more than i did at any other apartment. they exist and you'll run into them. the office staff was always really nice to me. but that's my experience and everyone will have a different one.

having been in both complexes, i feel that sunstone was cleaner. then again, it was a few years ago and i really don't know if management has changed or whatever. good luck finding a place. just take all of the advice for what it is. nothing's going to replace your opinion of a place when you actually visit it.

Not a real serious option, but it might be fun to look at... are there any available houses to buy around campus/downtown... what kind of monthly payments would they take... what kind of internet resources are there to browse through this kind of thing?

some of the complexes there offer wireless internet now. i had a friend that rented a house 2 streets down from franklin street with a bunch of her friends. they went through a realtor to find it though.

some friends who were at a complex that had the "free" internet and cable were always having trouble with not having the standard channels and with the internet constantly going out. not that time warner always seems to be much better (i mean, geez... ESPN U please!) but just thought i'd let you know

What about Carrboro? I've only ever been to the Cat's Cradle...at night, so I don't know much about it.

I went driving around Chapel Hill getting a feel for the place. It was early in the evening, but still too late to tour apartments. Still got to drive around some, see where they were located, the parking situations and all that. As I thought the house plan was out of my range, and nothing is available in the areas I'm interested in. But I have been able to narrow down apartment choices somewhat so far. Maybe I can actually tour apartments this coming weekend. But I still need to hear back from one school on grad school stuff before I can make any commitments.

I would just get an apartment near Southpoint in Durham and not live in Chapel Hill, if I could help it....

Is it crazy living near Southpoint? What's it like? Does anyone have any apartment recommendations?

What about Morrisville?

stay away from farrington lake. loud because of the interstate, and stinky because a water treatment plant is next door. The place i currently live at has the same floorplans, no interstate noise, and no water treatment plant!

i checked out about 12 places today, its difficult to find a safe place with 1br/1bath for less than $600. i mostly checked out places in carrboro (2-5 mi from campus); they seemed the cheapest. Most 2br apartments are in the 650-800$ range.

camden/summit governors village seemed pretty nice when i visited a friend's apartment, but it's not really a straight shot to campus. when i went to sunstone, the manager just seemed like he was high. he didnt know any of the prices for the apartments.

if you have any questions about specific apartment pricing, drop me a pm and i'll let you know if i checked it out.

Here's the response I received from the lady at Bolinwood:

Quote :
"I have lived here for 3 years. It is a real nice place, very quiet. I have about 40% students, lots of single parents with kids and families. I like the mix here. We have everything and all kinds of people. I rarely get noise complaints or any complaints for that matter.

Being that these units are condos, I have some owners who allow pets and some that don't. We have a $200 pet fee and no monthly charge.

To move in you need a full month rent and the security deposit."

^^Thanks for the info… I was having trouble finding out anything about that place. Although I’m a little weary of views from people who are still living at a given place, as opposed to those who have lived there.

While living in Sullivan, Bragaw, Metcalf, & UT I thought of the convenience of being on campus, the proximity to friends, having university staff to take care of maintenance problems. But now I can also see that they were really small, I mean living quarters that that were smaller than the kitchen I have now, the maintenance wasn’t great, some neighbors were fun, but there was plenty of loudness, disruptions, fire alarms, puke in the elevators, smoke in the stairwell by my room, being kicked out over holidays, having to move out & back in b/c of summer break etc. If I had taken all the negatives seriously, then living on campus might have been hell, but I was able to enjoy it for the time I was there.
