I've heard sooo many people foam at the mouth over what may come to pass at Carolina next year, with the current top 25 team and the "best recruiting class ever". I've even heard on here from State fans that Carolina will probably win it all next year.

Bullshit. Sure, Carolina is on a roll right now, and we're dejected and feeling like they can't fail. Sure, they do have one of the strongest recruiting classes, based on the numbers and hype, in recent memory.

Sure they'll be good, maybe even a top 10 team and ACC title contender. Hansblow might be back, and that'll be huge if he does. But still, many many things have to fall perfectly into place in order for them to go all the way. Recuiting ranking and hype doesn't always translate well in college basketball.

I'm just sick of people seeing that amazing recruiting class and automatically chalking greatness up on the board.

I am in law school up here at Ohio State. The Buckeye fans are just as bad about their class next year. To them, it is a foregone conclusion that they will win it all next year. I guess the math is simple: Good team this year + great recruiting class = title. I agree with Slackerb in that a lot of things have to fall into place for a title. It is just so funny to listen to sports talk radio up here because there are no college teams worth a damn around here (not like in the triangle with Duke, Us, and UNC), so everybody is on the OSU bandwagon and Herbstreit (who has a show up here) is always like, "let's all wear red at the Schott (their arena) this weekend and get loud and crazy". I know they are just trying to get things started but it is just really annoying. I catch so much s**t from my classmates and how they are so much better than us and the Big 10 is the best...blah blah blah. This seems like a rant and it is simply me venting. Thanks TWW.

I read an article about Oden that suprised me. He was a phenom in high school his junior year, and then the hype and everything go to him so much that his senior year he didn't want to be the star. Their team went from one of the top teams in the nation to not even ranked because in some of the biggest games he disappeared, his coach even gave him shit because he wasn't demanding the ball and only taking 4-5 shots a game.

If he gets that scared by hype in high school, what do you think is going to happen when they're already predicting him to be one of the most dominating centers in the league next year?

I don't know man, I haven't seen that. I just know I watched him play in a televised high school game this year and the dude was blocking shots like a mad man and had like 30 effortless points to go along with his 15 boards or twenty boards. I'm thinking it's a safe bet that he's gonna be pretty damn good. Not to mention that their recruiting class is stacked even without oden.

roy was a good coach at kansas too. winning the NC didn't suddenly make him a good coach.

and losing in the NC game when he was at kansas didn't make him a bad one either. i thought bill cowher was a good coach before he won the super bowl this year. the guy is a good coach, you can't deny that. Doh was NOT a good coach. Roy is.

nobody's denying that, but it's not like OSU's coach is a slouch either. he's one of the best up and coming coaches in college basketball. I wouldn't be surprised if Indiana made an effort to pick him up

the fact remains that OSU has just as good a class coming in as carolina, but OSU has the most promising big man in YEARS. Unless Roy can post his ass up, I'll still give the nod to the buckeyes

There was an article in ESPN the mag last month (the issue called NEXT where they hype the future stars in a variety of sports). The article was saying that Oden dissappeared in games in his junior year and during one big game only took like 4 shots. The pressure with the NBA and only being a junior and being compared to Kareem was getting to him. Once he committed to Ohio State, I guess he started playing better.

Okay, I hate UNC, but c'mon, they are going to be sick next year. Yes you are right, it takes a lot of things to go right, injuries, bracket draw, etc., but they will be on a short list of contenders next year. This team is going to be at least 12 deep, has one of the top 3 coaches in America, and has the first unanimous freshman ever selected to the All ACC team. In a word, nasty.

This is sports talk, and last I checked we talk about all kinds of non-State things.

So let me have my damn thread about Carolina.

^^ what team isn't 12 deep? The point is that a recruits ranking often turns out to be misleading and in no way guarantees a good player. You can't just take their class and add in what the freshman are ranked and say they will have 12 good players.

There are many more things than injuries and bracket seedings that affect a season too...mainly team chemistry. This year's Carolina team has it. The Carolina team before they won the championship had the talent, but not the chemistry. See also WF this year.
