Yes. You have to reencode it (which can take up to several hours, depending on how fast/slow your computer is).

How many of these movies would fit on it?

You probably could compress a movie down to iPod sizes in as little as 800MB (probably less... i'm not up on my h.264 quality and bit rates), so approximately 40.

shit, more like 1/2 that.

You could fit 60 or more movies on a 40gig video.

The real question is WHY would you?

It's not really a "Video iPod" though, it's just an iPod that happens to be able to play some videos.

lack of google search strikes again. seriously, you'd save alot of time just asking google instead of asking a message board

as long as you dont want tv playback its really easy to get a full length movie under 250mb

i mean its a 2.5" screen people, you can compress it a lot without being able to tell

Let's do this by the numbers. This iPod has a 320x240 display and 40 GB of storage, right? And it does H.264 video? H.264 at 320x240 has a maximum required bitrate of, like, 768 Kbps. Assuming the average movie is 90 minutes long (5,400 seconds), that gives us:

768 Kb/s * 5,400 s = 4,147,200 Kb = 518,400 KB = 506.25 MB

So it'd only take a little more than 500 megabytes on average to store a feature-length movie in the iPod's native format. In 40 GB of storage, we can fit nearly 81 movies (80.909, to be a little more precise).

Does this match up to Apple's marketing claims of 150 hours of video storage? Well, 150 hours is 540,000 seconds.

768 Kb/s * 540,000 s = 414,720,000 Kb = about 49.44 GB

Well, looks like it counts for the 60 GB model, at least.
