maybe in the rural areas. I've lived in states with lottery's all my life before college and I never saw this yet people talk about it like it's commonplace when you have a lottery...3/10/2006 8:23:11 AM |

Ny fiancee worked as an assistant manager of a grocery store in upstate New York back when she was in highschool. She handled pretty much every lotto purchase and by in large it was the elderly, minorities, and the poor (or some combination of all three) that played the games. Usually it was spending like $25-$50 at a time.
Here is a snippet from a post I made in SB:
Just did a quick search and found this demographics report on the Texas lottery. They removed a couple outliers in the lowest economic bracket because they spent an exorbitant amount of money on lottery tickets (find this a bit convenient but even without them the numbers are evident). http://www.txlottery.org/info/demographicreport2004.pdf
Income Spent/Month % Monthly Income <$20,000 $76.50 9.18% 20-29,000 $106.04 5.09% 30-39,000 $79.32 2.72% 40-49,000 $112.11 2.99% 50-59,000 $39.24 0.86% 60-75,000 $34.37 0.61% 76-100,000 $28.96 0.39% >100,000 $71.42 0.57% < HS diploma $173.17 HS diploma $82.04 Some College $64.74 College Grad $48.61
White $55.02 Black $108.96 Hispanic $102.20 Other $103.90
So the lower your income and less you are educated the more you spend on lottery tickets. Of course if you are minority you spend twice as much so basically the most active participants are poor and uneducated minorities.3/10/2006 9:24:14 AM |

what happened to freedom to do what you like with your money? Because poor people do something stupid, that doesn't mean it should be illegal. It means they should be better educated by those who DO know better.
I heard on the radio today about a woman making 2 grand a month who was given a loan on a house that she had to pay off at 1 grand per month. Firstly, they shouldn't have given her that loan, but she DEFINITELY should have been better educated as well.

yeah this is a stupid arguement
i am sorry they use their money to play games, they have a mind of their own to do what they want, if they dont maybe they should be commited or something for bieng insane, i dunno this is dumb
if the NC lotto is gonna be true to form, the money they make off it should go back to educating these fools who supposedly shouldnt be buying lottos tickets in the first place
rich people/eople with money to live dont play cause they dont need the money as badly, not because they are SMARTER, so fucking stupid

It looks like the people who are smarter spend less. Smarter people also make more money on average. To me the idea that one would play the lotto because they need the money seems to be one of the more stupid things I've heard. "Lets see I need 5k to buy that used car so I'm going to spend the $500 I have on lotto tickets so I could win that 5k" Of course there are people who agree with with that logic.

Then why do we place limitations on where welfare money/foodstamps can go? The whole point is not that I have a problem with playing the lottery, or even gambling, its that you are getting your extra money not from an equal spread of society... you are "taxing" the people that we spend so much money and time trying to help. Instead of a lottery could we not simply add a sliver of income/sales/whatever tax? A lottery only benefits me as an upper-middle class individual... I will never buy lottery tickets because I am educated enough to understand the odds and what makes better economic sense for myself. If the government needs a larger income base then they've done so in a way that disproportionately takes from the "lower" segment of society (as evident in the numbers) instead of getting it equally from everyone (or even more from the wealthy, like with income tax). THe government is flat out exploiting the lower-middle class.
Quote : | "rich people/eople with money to live dont play cause they dont need the money as badly, not because they are SMARTER, so fucking stupid" |
Exactly, people with money (or common sense knowledge of gambling odds) know that it is pointless to participate so in essence stupid people and poor people with a dream are being drained of their money by the government instead of everyone equally.
I am amazed that any liberal would support the lottery... it has "fat pocketed Republican" written all over it.3/10/2006 11:21:24 AM |

^^ Regardless of whether it's voluntary, it's a state run program to get money for the state. Just because it's voluntary doesn't mean it isn't a tax. A piss poor one at that, with a third or less of the money actually ending up going to state programs. It's a tax for legislators who are too pussy to levy a tax. 3/10/2006 11:57:21 AM |

Just go to Gasburg, VA the next time the lottery gets really high. It's insane. There will be lines of people buying 50+ tickets in ragged clothes driving ragged cars. Meanwhile, I stop in and buy 1-5 tickets and feel like I'm wasting my money.
I worked with some older guys when I was in college that would drive to VA every week to buy tickets. These guys were probably pulling in $300 - $child support every week and they were spending almost every dime on cigarrettes and lottery tickets. They actually thought of it as a retirement/investing plan. It's very sad.
I'm still in favor of it though. Just because some people can't handle it doesn't mean that the rest of us shouldn't be allowed to participate. 3/10/2006 12:44:27 PM |

I never said it was a tax and there is a reason I put "taxing" in quotes. It is exploitation when you know full well who the target audience/bulk of customers are. Like I said, why is the lottery a better solution than an even tax across the board? Heaven forbid we actually make budget cuts. The goal of the state is to increase income and they are choosing to go a route that is documented as pulling far more money from minorities, the under-educated, and the poor instead of one that applies equally to society.3/10/2006 12:44:35 PM |

They could ... but look how much opposition comes from increasing student fees. Good luck doing that at the state level. Then you run into the issue of how to spend that money and blah blah blah.
(I don't have a link at the immediate moment, but CT has is one of the highest per capita income states ... WAY above the national average.)3/10/2006 2:26:29 PM |

They need a tax. But politicians are so scared of asking for money they need so they do stupid shit like this, which is effectively an incredibly inefficient, incredibly regressive tax.
