All the major 2008 GOP candidates are at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference this weekend in Memphis. Hotline is conducting a straw poll to determine who the early favorite is.

I'm personally pretty embarassed for McCain. I used to think he was a pretty stand up guy.

I like McCain ok but wouldn't vote for the guy. You do realize that he'd be the oldest president ever at the BEGINNING of his term if elected, right? Older than the previous record holder (Reagan) was at the end of his second term.

We're both wrong. McCain would be older than Reagan when (if) he gets into office (McCain 70, Reagan 69) and would be older than Reagan if he went for two terms. Reagan was 77 when he left office.

He's still too old for my liking.

Look - I would have voted for McCain in a heartbeat in 2000, but there's no way in hell that I'm going to vote for a person who has the potential to be the oldest president ever. It's just not a great idea, IMO.

Allen or Warner - either way and things are peachy. I'm actually hoping to split up the government a bit with the 2006/08 elections to get some more balance.

Frist's win isn't that much of a surprise; the SRLC is in Memphis, after all. I think the two surprises are the numbers of Tennesseans (43 percent) that didn't vote for him and Mitt Romney's success overall. I'm a little surprised that Allen didn't best Romney considering his own Southern ties.

Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), a renowned heart surgeon before becoming Senate majority leader, went to the floor late Thursday night for the second time in 12 hours to argue that Florida doctors had erred in saying Terri Schiavo is in a "persistent vegetative state."
