back in the 70's UNC reported a violation by coach Sloan (that they themselves commited) that cost us a possible national championship...

in the late 80's the program was scandalized by unproven accusations against coach Valvano...

if you've forgotten these things then you need to get your head checked...

timswar what was Sloan's violation, and was it even proven? i know the story behind Valvano's players getting shoes from some local store for free, without his knowledge, and then turning around and reselling them. didn't the NCAA find nothing, and one of the investigators said we ran a model program, and would be happy if any one of his kids played for Valvano. i know about the idiot from the N&O and the book with all the fallacies in it. the question i have is, why did NCSU fire him? if nothing was wrong, why didn't the administration give a big Fuck You to the N&O? i was too young to remember everything, and while i have V's book back home, i've yet to read it. my dad read it, and said it was an intriguing book, and that it was bs how they treated him.

well that seems like a stupid rule. so if you were to be showing a couple of guys the arena, and say you play a quick game of 2-on-2 with a combination of one recruit and one of the assistants vs. the other recruit and another assistant, that could be a recruiting violation? that could technically be a pick-up game by definition. an impromptu game played by players who just met.

The same reason Indiana fired Bob Knight. Because of the shit spewed by NandO and Peter Golenbach (Who I assume is the "book" youre talking about... "Personal Fouls"), our program was labeled as the dirtiest program in NCAA history at the time. The book was full of false accusations, absolutely ridiculous claims, and among other things, many grammatical errors.

However, the admins knew we also weren't a "clean" program and they thought it would be better if we just cleaned house. Nationwide media sources trusted that NandO was practicing "responsible journalism" and bought it nationwide... hook, line, and sinker. Little did they understand the Tarheel media machine at work. We were absolutely blasted everywhere in the nation for our "dirty program". Thus, Valvano was asked to step down.

1) Thompson had a family friend who used to travel to Raleigh for buisness every 2-3 weekends or so. The family friend was an NCSU alumnus. DT's family was dirt poor and the familly friend offered to give DT a ride to Raleigh to visit his friends (who went to nC State) on a few occasions. You aren't allowed to provide free transportation on unnofficial visits, thus we got bit (This was found after the investigation...but it was a minor infraction at best)

Also playing in the game was Bill Brafford, a UNC football player. Well, the assistant didn't know it was an infraction but apparently when word traveled around Chapel Hill, Dean did. Here's the kicker: The chief NCAA investigating officer during our investigation was none other than Bill Gutheridge's close friend and his COLLEGE ROOMATE at Kansas State University. Thus, we were screwed from the very beginning. So there you have it

During the investigation, they also found that DT had spent one night with his best friend from High School during his orientation... another minor infraction.


We expected a slap on the wrist, but apparently Gutheridge and Dean, on a fit of jealousy, pulled some strings with an old friend at NCAA headquarters, and got us banned from the NCAA the next year. The rest is history.

Golenbach deserves a swift kick to the face, I can't even believe I am mentioning that man's name. You don't even know how pissed off I get when I hear that book being mentioned by Holes. I have to put up with that shit every damn day.

On a side note I had a bartender in Chapel Hill tell me one night that Valvano was an overrated coach who slipped up and rode momentum to a National Championship and that they "played his cancer up too much"

This is my main reason for loathing Tar Heel Nation.

I read Personal Fouls...this might hurt, but a lot of that book is irrefutably true. The scandals are fake, but what they do nail down is the fact that V's teams were never that good. In 1987 we lost to Tampa. TAMPA UNIVERSITY, A DIVISION II SCHOOL. And the stories about Charles Shackelford and Chris Washburn, i mean come on now, you know those guys did some stupid shit.

Aside from the 2 reg. season titles, we finished below 4th regularly in an 8 team league.

In V's defense, he never broke any academic rules with those guys that I know of (Although I'm sure he had some kind of string pulling). The ACC didn't have strict academic standards what-so-ever then... and V just took it to the limit.

I don't doubt that I've heard rumors of Washburn making a 600 on the SATs.. Are these true? And if so were there no regulations in place at that time?

Thing is, like so many other coaches are finding out, even if you don't KNOW about the infractions that take place (even if they are minor) you are still responsible for them... unless you are polish and have a long last name that beings with K (Myron Piggie/Maggette)...
