I have applied for quite a few internship opportunities in the biomedical engineering and biological fields. I've followed up, contacted them personally, and still only heard back from a few. Does anyone have any suggestions/experience on places I should apply?

Drop by CALS career center and see if they still know of stuff open.

In my past experiences, it's seemed like places either want to hire early (due dates before March 1, some before Feb 1) or in May. Good luck!

I would try to get in touch with the people at PPD. They're building a new headquarters tower here in Wilmington, and will be looking to hire as soon as it is completed.

yes, she still does. But she just had a baby so she is on maternity leave until april.

We have still been receiving e-mail about internships, which have been really helpful. Unfortunately, I didn't even think about an internship until a few weeks ago, and a lot of the deadlines have passed. I was just trying to find out other experiences with internships. Really, I would love to work with a research group on campus or with a well-developed biotech company.

btw, I'm still putting out tons of applications!

^ It's way late to look at that. I applied in January last year, and when I followed up mid-March, I was told basically "the way to get an NIH position" was to apply very early, and directly contact a PI, who could then look you up in the system and claim you and a spot for you. I tried then contacting people and at that point everyone was full.
