I'm not saying sendek is going to win a national championship, or that valvano was a shitty coach. If you responded as such, then you're only portraying your own thoughts on the current coach into this thread.

my question was meant to ask whether or not state fans were as critical back then of coaches not living up to expectations as they are now. at the time we entered the ACC tournament, valvano was an unproven coach that had lost 10 games in a season where we were expected to do a lot better. What happened after that is history and to be discussed in a different thread than this one.

i'd imagine (or at least hope) that the fans were a lil forgiving since he lost the best player for almost the entire regular season

We were favored by many to win the ACC that year.

We were awesome before Whittenburg went down, and we were awesome after he came back.

His first game back was the first game of the ACC tournament...and we all know how it went after that.

Apples to oranges. .

I can admit that Herb has taken some head... both due and undue. He's done good things and I think he does get it a little harder than he should at times.

That said, all coaches do. Herb is at a university that wants to win more than any in the nation, both becuase we have and becuase our neighbors... who once looked up to us... still are national programs.

Dean Smith and coach K got it much much worse than Herb, but they delivered...quick. I dont think Herb will leave or be fired, but it's up to him whether he shuts us up or proves us right.

As far as Valvano, he had his list of critics. Thing is, Valvano won a few ACC championships and had us a top program in a short amount of time

Herb probably has been more consistent than Valvano's teams, but Valvano's good teams were much better than Herb's

Apples and Oranges.

I hate when people try to compare coaches from different eras with completely different situations...(this goes both ways PackBacker, I'm not aiming this at you).

There are not a lot of 32-year old head coaches that could do a good job in the situation Herb Sendek was put in here at NC State. I'll leave it at that.

^ I really think a lot of the reason Herb has taken heat is becuase he's not won big quickly like other greats have... but couple that with a personality that is completely dry.

Now the psychopathic "Herb can do no wrong" posters on this board are going to come in with some stupid argument about "OMF HERB DOESNT WEAR RED SHOES" or something similarly as stupid.... and just becuase you have a personality doesn't mean you're adored... but I think it's at least something that helps a fanbase relate to you.

Even if V hadn't won quickly here like he did, I don't think he would have been treated like Herb. V wasn't a salesman like Amato... he was just a magnificent person to be around. The alumni loved him.... I don't think Herb has that advantage

For the record: V was in the frickin' mob and his scandals killed our program for years. Herb hasnt he ballsack or gumption to do something like that for a good reason maybe?

Also it seemed like it was easier to make a "lucky run in the tourney" and win it all back then given the competition and lack of hype/officiating fiascos/etc. When was the last time a cinderella really went all the way?

V was not in the mob

V's "scandals" aren't what killed this program. Peter Golenboch and NandO killed this program

Kansas in '88.

Teams can't slip under the radar these days like they could in the '80s, thanks to 24/7 sports coverage.

Ditto, Dave... At least we may very well have a lock on the greatest cinderella story of all time despite what becomes of us vs. the UNC/DUKE goliaths in years to come.... (but damn is sure would be nice to turn the tables sooner or later....)

Its a joke amongst some ppl that we was in the mob, but surely it is nothing more than that. Not to be taken seriously like so many other posts here apparently.... Happy?

yeah, Jimmy V was Tony Soprano's second cousin and actually murdered because he won a game he took money to throw. That whole cancer thing was a cover-up.

While mostly true, Valvano brought that investigation upon himself. He recruited extremely questionable athletes and stretched himself thin attempting to be an AD and head coach of a major college basketball coach at the same time....which in turn didn't give him enough time to look after a basketball team full of quesionable characters.

I love V...but he definitely wasn't perfect.

And not all of the alumni loved him....back when all the turmoil was going on, a lot of Wolfpack faithful were pissed off at V. However, time has healed a lot of wounds, especially the way V has been revered in the basketball community...his perception among Wolfpack fans has gotten a lot better and seems to be at an immortal status.

if he hadn't died so quickly after the scandal occurred, time probably wouldn't have healed any of those wounds. He'd probably have pulled a Rick Pitino and gone to coach Wake Forest into history.

He wasn't perfect... and you're pretty dead on with the post. Two things I'll add.

- I agree about the AD thing
- When V recruited sketchy athletes, the ACC Admission standards were nearly nonexistent and from what I understand (feel free to prove me wrong, I just haven't heard of it), V never really broke rules to get these players in. I realize they were dumbasses and he brought it upon himself, but all I'm saying is it was no grounds for a death sentence looming from the NCAA. The ACC actually changed their admission standards after the V fiasco

The medias perception of V was ultimately his downfall. Granted, I'll agree that he gave them ammo. Still, completely undeserving of the way he was treated.

Well, yes. I'm talking beforehand...during his tenure here.
