modified dvd drive firmware. they even give you the offset where the important info is. it sounds pretty easy to do from what has been posted. the issue is that you can't run unsigned code as of yet. 3/19/2006 3:12:02 PM |

^^^ Yea, if you have a fucking rom programmer. The only way to do it is to manually remove the bios chip, manually flash it, and reinsert the thing.
Might be easy for the .05% of the population with the tools to do it. Also it hasn't been released and won't be.
It's still going to be a few months before someone figures out a way for idiot users to do this anywhere near safely. And they can't just sell the modified chips, because each one has a unique key that has to be manually retrieved and put back in. 3/19/2006 8:58:20 PM |

so all this hack does is let you play burned games it seems to me it would have been easier to modify the disks rather than the console 3/19/2006 11:46:29 PM |

I have a chip programmer actually.. but I was thinking. Since this drive is close enough to another pc drive already mentioned, and there are plenty of programs that backup and flash optical drive firmware within windows, why not do it that way? back it up, open the bin, edit what you need know, flash that new bin onto the drive. I'm sure it's possible to hack up some way to power the drive, maybe even with an idle xbox.
I think they're being deliberate in saying how difficult this mod is just to keep the heat off them and the potential piracy down, but there has to be a better way of doing it. 3/20/2006 9:59:18 AM |
