I've had a lot going on in my family lately and haven't been able to do a lot of my work due to certain circumstances that my advisor finds a good reason to withdraw for the semester. My grades have went pfff down the drain in the past few weeks because I've practically lived in the hospital. My problem is financial aid. I received $3000+ in grants this semester and wouldn't know if I would have to pay it back. Also, I plan on starting back this summer or this fall, and I don't know if I would be eligible for more financial aid because I would withdraw. My advisor told me to call financial aid to find out, but I wanted to know if any of you guys knew before I called.

im pretty sure you have to return financial aid
but im not sure, i just know i had to go to the financial aid office and get them to sign a form saying i received no aid

I know that whenI dropped from full-time to part-time before, I didn't have to pay anything back. But I believe that if you don't pass 24 hrs in an academic year (this does include summers though) it might cause problems for next academic year's fin. aid.

hmmm I had 14 from last semester, and I'm hoping to take 7 this summer but I'm not sure if dropping to part time is an option, unless I keep one of my classes that I actually kept up with

theres no way I could come back to school if I didnt get fin. aid though - I come from a poor family, and I know its not the university's fault but pff something I guess I'll have to deal with

i wanted to just drop one class that i knew i couldnt keep up with, and i could probably pass the rest with Cs or B-s but my advisor is worrying about matriculation and my gpa, which is a 2.7 for my first semester - im not the smartest person, and ive never claimed to be, im just trying the best i can

You have to pay back the loans. I dont know about grants. I don't recall having to pay back the grants i got for the semester i left.

looks like, according to #2, he'll be fine.
I was in a similar situation a year and a half ago, and I ended up working to pay that semester's loans back to NCSU before I could register, and then I was able to come back, and also was eligible for financial aid.

Sounds like you might be good to go.
Financial aid's # is 5-2421...direct these questions toward your fin aid counselor. If your last name is whitlosomething or the other, your counselor is marlene schaffer, and I strongly suggest your direct anything more complicated than "have you gotten my paperwork?" to someone other than her.

As others have said, talk to financial aid ... they'll tell you exactly how your loans/grants/etc. I'd recommend going in person if you can ... a phone call is useful ... going in person has a lot more of an effect though (IMHO). Also, you can probably Google up the specific grants you are receive and read about what the conditions are for withdrawl and what happens as a result.

Everyone here has his or her OWN financial aid counselor, according to last name. They can deal with any situation. Go the Fin. Aid page, scroll down and look for staff, select it and you will see the names, DIRECT phone numbers, and email local addresses of all the fin. aid advisers. There are also appeals that can be done (Dr. Rance Jackson handles those) and your regular adviser can provide a letter of support if he/she is aware of your situation. Others can too. There are ways to work things out if you have need- and it sounds like you do.

I withdrew in Oct 2003 to have surgery and I'm on full fin. aid. Since I was dropping after a certain date (it was after fall break), I didn't have to give any back, but I'll have to pay back the loans after I graduate. But I was back in Jan 2004 and my fin. aid was still good, I didn't lose any $ second semester and I just moved back into my dorm room in when I got back. On my fin.aid papers, it looks like I went to school a full 8 semesters b/c that's how much was paid for, but my transcript says I'm finishing in 7 (since I essentially paid for a semester I didn't use, I wanted to make sure I graduated on time without paying for one more semester).

As for the 24 hrs a year rule, I just filed an appeal in May 2004 stating my circumstances and since my GPA was good, they cleared me for aid for the 2004-2005 academic year.
