BUS 495K: Studies in Supply Chain Purchasing
BUS 474: Logistics Management
I had 370 with Favre, and loved it. Great guy, great class. On the other hand, this is probably not going to be as easy ... but if I take 474 I probably won't know who my instructor is until classes start and Favre's class will be all filled up. These both fill the same requirement. Plus, 495 has the option of taking an in-class MW or an "arrange" class. Not that Favre ever takes attendance or anything
WWYD?

This one isn't even close.
BUS *anything* w/ FAVRE! You know Favre's awesome. His 495K class is even better than 370. It's a small class, so you really see the "helpful guy who helps you w/ 370 homework" every single day in your class. It's a fun class that focuses on important things such as negotiating business deals and working with financial figures to make smart decisions. Real useful stuff. Plus, his out-of-class assignments aren't an absolute time-killer from semester's beginning 'til semester's end.
Now, on the flipside. 474 w/ Haynes is about the LAST class I'd recommend for an Ops concentrator. Newsflash, though: NCSU just hired a new faculty member a few weeks back to teach, you guessed it, 474. I have no idea who the person is, and if he's REPLACING Haynes 474 might be alright, but I mean you already know Favre's awesome so stick w/ what's promised.
Haynes is a brilliant guy with a non-boring English accent, but good heavens the workload. Brits must roll deep in assignments but we in the south prefer a more laid-back approach. Since Day 1 in that class it kicks your butt all over the place. There's no slowing it down, either. The mid-term was 7 pages of essay. My pen fell apart by the time it was over. You'll learn a lot if you can manage to focus instead of becoming a machine that just pumps out assignments, but it's not worth it. Join a class that actually is entertaining and informative w/ a great professor: 495K w/ Favre. 3/22/2006 6:46:10 PM |

Unfortunately that means now I can't take FLF 201 in that same time window... I didn't realize until this morning when I was looking at it that they contradict. There's a technology oriented French class (why can't they ALL be interesting?) in the 1:30-2:45 window MW. Ah well, c'est la vie.

^ Do anything you can to avoid 474. If 495K already full or something? If so, keep a CLOSE eye on TRACS and as soon as someone drops (if anyone's that foolish...) nab that spot.
Else, get ready for a head-slamming course. 3/23/2006 2:39:10 PM |

I already signed up for 474 too ... there are about 20 seats left in Favre's class. Screw French I guess ... I'd rather learn less in French in exchange for not having to go bald in 474. 3/23/2006 6:30:55 PM |

Here's an idea: Take both classes; they're both great professors with *a lot* to teach and not a lot of overlap. Sure Haynes will work you hard, but you're better off learning how to do it here than in front of your *boss.* And besides, effective, logical writing is one of the most difficult and last skills most people develop. 7 pages of writing on a mid-term? Hardly overwhelming for an advanced course, but good for him.

Excessive workload =| effective teaching.
Haynes is a great person, but his required workload is so overwhelming you literally start to tune out any learning you might acquire just to get it all done. Diminishing returns kicks in on about the 3rd day of class.
I dare anyone to write 7 full pages of actually well-thoughout paragraphs in ~1 hour and not get frustrated. Typing is one thing, writing is another.
If you're a glutton for pain *or* you have a relatively simple schedule (less than 13 credit hours or so), then it'll probably help you in the long run. His lectures are great, but the syllabus is just out of control. 3/23/2006 8:39:37 PM |

Couldn't agree more. Haynes gives you plenty of time to do the work, everything is layed out for you at the beginning of the semester. Haynes gives you plenty of time to complete the assignments, generally handing them out a week or more in advance.3/23/2006 9:37:56 PM |

As if this is some kind of "God's gift to students"? I haven't met a professor yet that hasn't given at least a week on an assignment requiring any depth of thinking/work. It's not that he doesn't provide time, it's just that the syllabus is so jammed you become a paper-churning machine and don't learn anything from it. You just live one assignment to the next. It's not fun, and it's certainly not beneficial.3/23/2006 9:57:24 PM |

I'm sure Darren will agree with me on this ...
The real world doesn't want 7-page term papers. It wants a few powerpoint slides, and maybe a 500-word summary. The power here isn't in being able to find people to quote, but in being able to develop solutions to real problems and understand how to measure progress. My SSM came to me a couple weeks ago and asked me to tell her how our department is doing compared to our internal goals ... now, my "department" is everything DuPont does in paint, OEM, and refinish around the globe. I had two slides, and about 3 hours. She used these slides in a presentation to the VPGM and CEO the next morning. THAT is the real world.
To be honest, I'm not going to say there's nothing for me to learn ... but I simply won't be able to learn it if I'm overwhelmed with writing assignments. I'm not taking both because I'm already at 17. 3/25/2006 4:06:02 PM |

^ Bing-o.
If you take 474 already having 17 hours, you'll have a very, very hard time managing your family. I'm taking 20 w/ 474 included and my fiancee ia like because I can see her about 1-2 times per week while we stay only 20 mins. apart. The work on a nightly basis is so demanding.
