ok I need/want to lose around 15-20lbs any tips on how to do that without totally changing my diet. I run a little here and there trying to get better about it though. Not really seeing results bc I don't do it enough. If any of you have any tips please let me know.

she could get plastic surgery like all the other i want it now without effort and dedication people


you need to change your lifestyle. start eating a well rounded diet. start doing a lot of cardio (not just here and there), lift weights (yes, this will allow you body to function more efficiently and since you don't have balls, you won't develope a man's physique)

the formula is simple:

caloric intake < calories burned

cardio is good, but only cardio will give you a soft/ flabby body
to see real results (weight loss, toning and muscle added) you must lift weights
ive been at planet fitness since dec and they worked out a very simple cardio and lifting plan for me. ive been happy with the results

I'm doing my annual slim down for the summer and what I do is just increase my endurance in running. I'll do my normal runs, but more times a week, at greater speed, and longer distances. I don't dare change my eating habits because I don't want my metabolism to be compromised. You may want to lay off on the alcohol during this time too...

That's not true. Cardio burns fat and builds lean muscle. How is that going to result in flabbiness? If you're flabby after a cardio regimine, it just means you're still fat. There are plenty of people who stay slim and toned without ever setting foot in a weight room.

Threads like this are a prescription for diaster. Everyone gives their advice and discusses things in terms of absolutes when they have no idea what they're talking about. "The ONLY way to see results is to lift weights. . ." Please.

That's not true. Cardio burns fat and builds lean muscle. How is that going to result in flabbiness? If you're flabby after a cardio regimine, it just means you're still fat. There are plenty of people who stay slim and toned without ever setting foot in a weight room.

and that statement there sounds like you are talking in absolutes also, see below, so please use your own advice

there are plenty of people who all they do is run and dont see the inside of a gym and are still flabby and there are plenty of people that do both and are still flabby

Cardio does not build enough muscle. If you want to lose weight then moderate weight training is a HUGE plus. In fact studies have shown that weight training alone does more than cardio alone. The more muscle you have the more there is that is able to burn calories. I think its something like for every 1 lb of lean mucle mass you add on you burn an aditional 50 calories a day. SO if you put on 10 pounds of lean muscle mass that is 500 calories a day and about 1 pound of fat every week. THis is not factoring any exercise either, just having the muscle there and doing your daily activities ccauses this loss. So if you combine the weight training with moderate cardio and a resepctable diet you will shed weight at a decent clip.

Just remember that you aren't going to lose this weight in a month. 1-2 pounds a week would be about what to expect with good effort put forth.

Oh and get a subscription (or at least pick up a few issues of) Women's Health magzine. Its the same people who do the popular Men's Health issue and it has the same kind of format (not totally health centric but not inundated with sex, job, and outrageous vacation stories). Its pretty cheap right now since it just started this fall.

In the cardio vs. lifting weights argument, an important factor to be considered is Resting Metabolic Rate (http://www.virtualfitnesstrainer.com/cooltools/What_is_Your_Resting_Metabolic_Rate.htm). More muscle --> better RMR. Some people build excellent muscle just by doing a lot of yoga. Whatever floats your boat.

Yeah, but Yoga is by no means a low intensity exercise. I've been a few times when my fiancee goes and it totally kicks your ass if the instructor is good. It most definitely works your muscles pretty well. Most people only try a beginners yoga class.

Not at all. I corrected an absolute. I didn't say cardio was the only way to drop weight, only that lifting weights is not a REQUIREMENT to slim down.

^^^how so? if she's never lifted a weight, ran a mile w/ even decent mechanics, or modified her diet in any way...what makes you think spending money on a trainer/advisor would be a waste of money? have you considered the consequences of a lifetime of doing things hit-or-miss because "that's the way i've always done it" or "it used to work for me"? maybe it wasn't a big deal back when we used to live to be 25 years old...osteoarthritis/other degenerative joint problems are a reality whether you believe it at 21 years old or not...

Why don't you just sign up for a Fitness & Wellness class now so that next fall when you still haven't lost that 20 lbs you can actually do something about it.

sorry, should have been more explicit...assuming she does decide to lose the weight and not for more than a few weeks/months (she makes lifestyle changes)...she would a) achieve her goals much faster, b) be instructed to exercise in a manner that minimizes the joint stress that could lead to joint degeneration/injury, and c) stay more on task and motivated with a personal trainer....

i'm not saying a personal trainer is great for everyone or that you or Liu should spend money on one...i'm saying for the inexperienced novice and the ignorant (of biomechanics, physiology, nutrition, and other areas related to exercise prescription) need personal trainers....

how are you able to make the assessment "i'm just as qualified as you are." i have no idea what your educational background is or isn't...you have no idea what mine is...

money in my eyes...really? well, i'm trying to make a profession out of what i am passionate about doing....which is to help people live a longer and healthier life through exercise/diet/resistance training (believe me, money is not my primary motivator)....what do you do for a living, mother teresa?

actually, i didn't mention him being a triathlete nor i being a runner because that in no way would qualify either of us to prescribe exercise for someone...that's almost equivalent with saying, "i've had an appendectomy before so i think i could perform one." just because he's a decent triathlete doesn't mean he has a knowledge of biomechanics, physics, nutrition, etc. or much less how to apply it...

i'll make sure i'm more reverent to the "IRONMAN" next time

also, how'd you get the "swann" part of the google search? that's not in my profile...stalk much?

Ok I really wouldn't cinsider myself a fattie I weigh 150lbs and I am 5'6" on a meduim frame.
I am taking a fitness/wellness class in the fall. I used to run (at at slow pace) 3 miles 2 times a week last semester. I have not been as motivated this semester and therefore am not as consistant. I do most of my running out side on Centenial(sp?). I have not been running in 2 1/2 weeks bc my bf and I have both been too busy to run. I have tried lifting weights and actually took a class in high school and put on more weight instead of losing it. I don't have a ton of time so weights and cardio are a lot to do.
Do any of you know some quick fat burning exercises that I could try every morning to improve that weight loss when I do start my cardio back up again.

^^For real. Give Liu some credit. I'd venture to say it's impossible to complete an Ironman without at least some basic knowledge of dietary concerns and biomechanics.
