kinda old, but its still damn funny. so in case you missed it:
Quote : | "DJ Fired For Calling Condoleezza Rice 'Coon'
ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis radio show host is out of a job after using a racial epithet on the air while talking about Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
KTRS-AM announced the firing shortly after morning talk show host Dave Lenihan used the word "coon" in describing Rice's attributes for the post of NFL commissioner.
Lenihan and the station's management both called the use of the word a "slip of the tongue."
Station president and general manager Tim Dorsey said the utterance was nonetheless "unacceptable, reprehensible and unforgivable."
Lenihan was heaping praise on Rice, a big football fan, then said: "She's African-American, which would kind of be a big coon. A big coon. Oh my God. I am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry for that."
Reached at home, Lenihan said he was trying to say "quite a coup." He says he's drafting a letter of apology to Rice.

I haven't heard the actual audio, but the transcript looks like it was just a slip of the tongue 3/30/2006 1:45:28 AM |

the station is kind of typical midwest-conservative sports/news/talk format, and the guy was just mortified. he's actually a big Condi Rice fan.
but i mean, if youre gonna be on air personality, you really should stay away from those big foriegn words like "coup". its a tricky word.
and really, why would the fact that shes african american make being NFL commissioner a "big coup" anyhow? kinda retarded thing to say even if he woulda said it right.

no matter what word he was trying to put there, even coon, the sentence doesn't make sense 3/30/2006 7:29:48 AM |

I can see it as a coup. The NFL is primarily played by black people, and yet run almost entirely by white people. Taking over the upper echelon with people in your race is kinda like a coup where the governmental authority is overthrown and the underlings takeover.
Still a stupid sentence, but I can see how it makes sense. My problem with it is that its just stupid to think that putting a black genius woman in charge of a bunch of black millionaire athletes isn't a big freaking deal. Its not like the white commissioners couldn't do a good job because they don't have "street cred" or something ridiculous like that. For crying out loud, she's a wealthy genius who got a degree at like 15 or something, not a poor or middle class black. 3/30/2006 9:03:56 AM |

he was trying to say boon. As in boon for the league. Like boosting the image.
Boon: 1. A benefit bestowed, especially one bestowed in response to a request. 2. A timely blessing or benefit: A brisk breeze is a boon to sailors.
Coon sounds nothing like coup.

Haha, I combine words out loud like that all the time. In my head I'm debating between using "coup" and "boon". Next thing I know my mouth has made a compromise for me. Sucks for him. 3/30/2006 12:35:52 PM |
