I need to tow a car 4 miles.

Is a strap and pipe, or straps and pipes sufficient?
There will be a person in the car, attempting to mildly steer and brake.

what laws govern this?

the car has plates, but is not insured. Does that matter? The engine threw a rod, and is siezed from what I have been told.

nope, I picked up a volvo. Just need to get it home. Body is great, engine is shot (from what I understand, I haven't seen it myself). I figure I can take it for scrap, and make about $100.

Daryl...you cough up a trailer, I'll pull it.

It ain't the best idea in the world, but if you go slow then you should be okay.

As far as insurance and the legality of the whole thing? I'm not sure about that. But think about it like this: if you can inflict significant damage to somebody else's property with it, then you'd damn well better insure it. A car cannot be legally licensed without insurance anyway.

If I were you, I'd bite the bullet and pay Cooter's Towing fifty bux to haul it. Or find a trailer and I'll haul it for a few bux for the fuel.

daryl, 4 miles is a breeze if it's got steering and brakes. drop me a line if you need someone more than experienced in such activities.

i think it is legal as long as you have a solid connection between the two vehicles (ie a pipe)

but for 4 miles, i would just hook up a tow strap and put someone in the car and don't go too fast. This is key because they will have to brake completly on their own without the booster.

Or see how much a tow dolly or trailer is for a couple hours from a rent all place or uhaul.

AAA+ will tow you for free, if you got a membership or know someone who does

I work for AAA. Just don't want to have to wait for the damn truck once I call it.

To rent a tow dolly is $40. I'm not going to pay that.

i wouldn't be risking anything . . . especially since I'm not the one that needs to tow a car

Volvo towed with the Maxima.

Listed weight of Volvo @ 3076 lbs empty.
Towed 6 miles tonight.

Thanks a ton gk2004 for the help.
I drove the maxima, he drove the volvo, and the previous owner drove chase.

It was a good time, and went off with no incidents.

gk2004- my camera's pics magically vanished. If you want you can throw up the ones that you took.

It is a 93 Volvo 940.
Heated leather seats, good paint, good body
One tear in the drivers seat, cracked windshied, siezed motor (spun bearing possibly)

Anyone need parts?

Is that at sumter square?

Put a 5.0 in that volvo and track it. At least it is rear wheel drive .

yes, its former home was sumpter square.

I don't have the funds to do a motor swap, and I have no need for 3 running cars.

If someone wants to buy it, then it is $150 delivered to your door.
If not I will yank parts and then scrap it.

you could probably scare up enough money for the swap if you scrapped the turbo maxima idea

[Edited on April 3, 2006 at 9:46 PM. Reason : might have someone interested in some parts]

$150? how would you be making any money on that? how much did you pay for it?

That's my little secret.
Actually, I would make 1$ at that price, but I wouldn't have to worry about yanking parts out before scrapping it. I only bought it in the first place to keep if from getting towed and taken by the management at my friends place.

The car will take in over $125 in scrap alone.

I may actually loose a couple $$ if I take into acount gas and suplies, but I really don't care.

go to rei or great outdoors and get some static line, tie a knot on each car pull away with the person steering, keep it tight and have someone that is good at slacklining attempt to slackline while going down the road.

remember---when going downhill the car being towed must apply more brake than the other car so that the line stays tight, or else the slackliner might fall and get hit by a car or something

^, ^^ I was stating that as general information for everyone, because it is in fact the best way to tow a car, and its fun to do just for the hell of it too...its like that fear factor shit they do with helicopters and all except on the road.

no...slacklining with someone trying to balance in the middle...chains are overrated and could fuck up more shit than a strap of some sort that has some very slight elasticity to it so that it doesnt just slam the car, of course a bungee cord would be bad and static tubular webbing would be real static but thats only used when you have someone walking in the middle
