I want to get a DVD recordable drive, but I'm a little overwhelmed by the amount of info I'm getting when I 'google' to find out the differences. Basically I just want to be able to use DVD discs kind of the same way I use CD-R discs (size being the main difference) and I'm just curious...but if I have a downloaded movie on my PC that's say 320x240 (I'm making that up) is that how it would appear on my television screen if I recorded it to a DVD disc?

i imagine you want to burn a movie onto a dvd and play it on a dvd player? as long as it's in dvd format you can do that and it's possible - alternatively most dvd players play svcd/vcd formats and those would be more than likely be acceptable too

My first question is I want to get an internal DVD burner...and first and foremost I want to use it to burn data onto DVD discs much the same as I burn data onto CDR discs now (the main difference being the amount of data they can hold). So am I to assume that DVD-RWs are the same idea as CD-RWs?

My second question is if I have a movie on my PC that shows up at 320x240 size for example, if I open it up on my television using my regular DVD player, will it look just like a normal DVD would?

i'm still not sure how to answer that - how do you plan to open a movie on our tv using your dvd player - do you have a dvd image - a xvid/divx file - a svcd/vcd file - you need to be more clear

before you can burn a video to dvd, you have to convert it to the dvd format. there are burnings programs that will do this for you or you can use programs designed just for this purpose (go to VideoHelp for more info). either way, you'll get it converted into a file type called VOB and have the directory structure in place (Video_TS and Audio_TS) which you can burn to a DVD.

i wouldn't recommend using such low quality videos to watch on your TV - it'll look like crap. but since you just made up that resolution, i'll leave it at that. it'll be full screen, not miniature size

OK...well I have a .avi movie on my hard drive, and its full name is 'somemoviename (Dvd Divx).avi'

And I'm not sure what the differences in xvid/divx/svcd/vcd are. But that's what I have... so I'm wondering if I burn that on to a DVD disc, will I then be able to pop in that DVD on my dvd player which is hooked up to my tv? And also, if I have mpeg files, can I put those onto a DVD disc and watch them on my tv via my regular old dvd player?


*ok, well how about any suggestions as to what type of internal burner I should get? Seeing as how I'm obviously not well-versed in this area *

figure out what formats your DVD player supports and then find a guide to convert it to that format.

most divx files will not play on dvd players - there are a few dvd players that will play them - but it's safe to assume you do not have one of those - you can go to vcdhelp.com/dvdrhelp.com to check your dvd player's compatibility

you can however convert a divx file into a format that will play on a dvd player - typically you will not be able to just burn files to a dvd-r/w and put them into a dvd player and then just watch - the exception is if you dvd player supports playing files without being to svcd/vcd spec - files in the correct folders

saying you have an mpeg file is vague also - any format can have any extension - although typically you won't see a divx/xvid file with a .mpg/.mpeg extension

OK...so I went and got the Pioneer DVR-R100 from Fry's electronics. I've installed it, and burned, sucessfully, 2 data discs. Now I went and attempted to learn how to take an avi file on my computer, and convert it so that I can burn it on a DVD disc and watch it on my regular DVD player, which is a Panasonic RV31. But now I'm stuck because I just don't get what I'm supposed to convert it to...and furthermore, I don't know which 'freeware' program to use, in order to do it? All your help is greatly appreciated
