My roommate got caught drinking a while back and gave false information, he ended up getting caught because he couldnt repeat the social security # because he couldnt remember it. He got an obstruction of justice charge to go along with the drinking charge.

A few months down the road he gets pulled out at a party and gets another drinking citation, except this time he gives all false information and the cop doesnt realize it, except he was an idiot and gave the same false information he gave the first time (with the exception of the social, he made up a new one but didnt get asked it twice). He also just changed his last name from Han to Tan. What are the chances he can still get caught, and how fucked is he if he does?

This troubles me because the social security number was never supposed to become a national ID number.

Now it is used for everything.... it also disturbs me that even if I cant remember my bank account number, my bank has my social security number to verify me with. And the fact that private businesses have my social security number should be illegal. And the fact that it is used by law enforcement other is questionable as well.

I dont think they will look that hard. I know someone that has gotten away with that before. (alcohol charge) The cops even had his real name and that he was a state student too. (he gave them his student id and bullshitted the rest) All they would have had to do would be to present the school with a warrant to get all the information they are looking for, then go get him. Actually they could have found him on the directory withouht a warrant and got his adress from there. No one came after him and it has been a few years.

It is still ill advised to do. He could get caught. What is really at issue is will anyone look that hard to figure it out. In the hierarchy of shit they have to worry about it will may never get done. Hopefully he was not a dick to the cop or anything.

Why the hell did he even give out his social security # to the cops!!! he's an idiot, for more then just this reason.

You are Required to give your license, registration, and insurance info but not you social.

They can ask you for your social security #, but you DO NOT have to give it. Seriously just tell them that it is non of their business and is not meant for id purposes. They can't do shit.
