I've come to the conclusion that I need gas. You just can't weld really thin stuff with flux core; reverse polarity results in way too much penetration. Standard polarity hardly penetrates at all and sometimes results in cold welds.
So...where should I get my bottle, and what size would all of you recommend? I've never emptied a bottle, so I really don't know how long the usual sizes last (say, like a 200 or 300 cf bottle is what I used to use, along with about 3 or 4 other folks).
National Welders prices are a bit steep @ 165 dolla for the bottle initially and 57 dolla fer the gas for the 90cf size. 4/3/2006 10:11:18 PM |

tractor supply in smithfield I beleive is cheaper than that. Is national welders the one on 401/70 by the carquest in garner/raleigh? Or is it the one on capital? 4/3/2006 11:34:42 PM |

Welders Supply (919) 788-0681 5812 Lease Ln, Raleigh, NC 27617
screw national welders, they can eat my ass. prices are ridiculous and they're complete assholes unless you've got a large commercial account. welders supply has much better prices, and customer service is awesome no matter how small the purchase. i'd pay double to go there vs. ever going to national again.
i've heard good things about machine and welding supply also, but never been there personally.
[Edited on April 3, 2006 at 11:37 PM. Reason : ^^national is on capital. machine and welding there on south saunders/south wilmington.]

i can't recall what size mine is. larger one though, ~5ft. tall. probably same size as whatever Noen has. lasts a long time as long as you remember to cut it off after each use. i've been on gas for about 1.5 years, only on my 3rd tank after LOTS of welding. i don't always remember to cut it off either. 4/4/2006 1:12:52 PM |

I have one thats about 3 and a half feet tall, maybe six inches across. it has held up for a hell of a long time and is easy to move around. most carts wont take the big ass bottles. i use tri mix and it does well. be careful buying bottles, you can rent them and you can buy them from the companies, if you buy one some one has rented you are about screwed, if i remember how that works. 4/4/2006 9:10:39 PM |
