The gym is a gay and disgusting place. Why use someone else's sweaty, greasy machine when you can use your own in the comfort of your home? 4/5/2006 6:55:04 AM |

Some people are self conscious about going to the gym.
My brother used his roommate's bowflex once and really liked it. 4/5/2006 7:25:49 AM |

assuming you're asking because that's what you're looking to buy (and not what you have already) you would be better off buying a squat rack, a bench, and an olympic weight set (maybe throw in some dumbbells also if you can)
it's okay to work out at home, but you'd get better results with free weights vs bowflex 4/5/2006 9:12:51 AM |

the mechanics for the bowflex systems are pretty damn good for a home gym...the founder of http://www.resistancetrainingspecial.com (biomechanics training certification) has a lot of input on the design of the bowflex, and i've seen him in some of the infomercials as well...a lot of your progress is going to come down to how well you know how to configure the system to your biomechanics and strategically vary the exercises you perform...
the bowflex is good for a lot of exercises but you'll probably still need:

a great example of where the bowflex excels and free weights fail to some extent is a chest press (bench press or push)...try doing a chest press (unstable trunk) w/ free weights...i don't know of any way to do it (although a push-up is close though not quite the same neuromuscular recruitment)...it's easy with the cable systems...
so, the real question is: what's your goal??? the answer to that question is going to greatly affect your equipment choice(s)...4/5/2006 4:42:48 PM |

i got a bench and an olympic weight set, just nowhere to put it at the moment
the reason i want a bowflex is because it seems to do a lot without taking up much space and is alright to use indoors
i've pretty much decided on one, i just want to know where the Motivator series stacks up against the others (Extreme, etc.) 4/5/2006 4:53:24 PM |

well, from http://www.bowflex.com it seems like the motivator may be discontinued (at least there's no link on the first page) although i'm sure you could find one on sale at dick's or someplace like that...just compare the features on the website for the rest of the bowflex designs...i doubt anyone has experience w/ all of the bowflex lineup AND could give you an objective opinion...
however, there is one universal truth you might want to think about (almost universal, anyways...if you pay more, you get more and vice versa)...make sure it has the capabilities you want/need or you're just blowing your money.... 4/5/2006 5:18:24 PM |
