Coaches them right out of a win.

Up three with ten seconds left and she lets Maryland take a three to send it to overtime.

Egregious coaching mistake.

Gee Gail, what has a better chance of going in, a 19 footer or a shot from halfcourt?

When will coaches learn how to defend these end of game situations?

bullshit, we've let shooters take threes to tie the game many times against us.

You NEVER let the guy shoot, period.

FIRE OLIVER PURNELL...LORENZO ROMAR

Seriously Cam was wide open on his 3 at Clemson.

Washington left Rashad Anderson open time and time again and eventually lost. Funny thing is some people want us to hire Romar.

With few exceptions, Duke played great defense the entire game. Maryland just hit a hot streak and couldn't miss, no matter how off-balanced their shots were.

I agree with you rally...in the fact that I would foul in that situation.

But for some reason....MOST coaches never foul in that situation. I think they're just scared that if they actually lose after doing that then they'll never live it down. They'll always be refered as the "coach who actually fouled and lost."

Better to be the first coach to ever foul and lose than the millionth coach to not foul and lose.

Completely stupid.

It's totally impossible to get an offensive rebound on a FT in girls basketball. The offense isnt allowed within 10 feet of the basket.

On the other hand, Maryland shoots 40% from threes and you've got a forward standing flatfooted trying to guard a shooter 20 feet from the basket.

In fact, the defender didnt even act like she knew Maryland was taking a three there. You deny the shot at all costs.

Thats fucking stupid no matter how you slice it.

I agree that you defend the 3 at all costs, but your logic is like that of a retarded ape on lsd.

I'd have fouled before the shot.l let them have their 2 free throws then inbounds the ball and ran way from them. if maryland gets a steel then duke gave them the game

i'd rather be up by 1 with the ball, than down by 3 with them a chance to tie.

here's why you don't from a coaches standpoint.

The LAST thing you want to do is foul in the act of shooting. And if the offense sees it coming, will chuck a three right when getting fouled for the potential game tying 3 FT's or a 4 point play. Play the perimeter tightly and allow any drive to the basket within 5 seconds to go, but don't foul just in case the offense knows what your up to

you foul before they even have the opportunity to shoot. Right away on the inbound, or an off the ball foul.

^^ my god, these are girls we are talking about.

You are giving them WAY too much credit.

College athletes (ESPECIALLY girls) play like trained monkeys. They would never think of something like that on their own.

When's the last time you saw a college team properly execute the "two for one"?

Yet NBA players seldom make that mistake...

In college you'll see some shmuck get the ball with a minute left and then hold the ball til theres 30 seconds left and THEN shoot.... when clearly the correct play is to shoot with ~45 seconds left.

You do not foul in the act of shooting. You foul when someone is dribbling. No referee is going to award three free throws to someone who "shoots" after the foul is made...

Besides, three free throws is NOT a complete disaster.... An 80% shooter will only hit all three free throws 51.2% of the time (assuming independence, which granted is not entirely correct). And add the pressure to the situation and it's probably well under 50%.

Obviously, you don't want to foul somoene in the act of shooting, but doing it isn't catastrophic. It has a minor -EV.

However, letting someone take a 3-pter (esp a ~40% shooter) is catastrophic.

The chance of hitting the first Free throw (80%) x Chance of getting offensive rebound (~10%) x chance of hitting ensuing shot (~50%).

That's about 4%.

Also add the probability of the shooter hitting both free throws (64%) then driving the length of the court in 6 seconds and scoring (~5-10%). Thats about 5%.

4% + 5% = 9%.

It's simple math.

I know it sounds like I know everything sometimes... but in reality it's just because I do.

I had money on Duke so of course Im gonna watch it.

And I LOATHE women's basketball, but that game was actually well played.

Actually, the level of play probably wasnt any good it just looked good comparatively since the mens tournament was such a joke this year.

THank god college basketball is over and we can watch the NBA/MLB now without being bothered by that garbage.
