Was a consensus ever reached regarding the ending to this movie? I originally saw the movie in the theater when I was 12-13 years old, so I just took the ending at face value and never gave it a second thought.

I came across the page for this movie on IMDB recently, and good grief there are several theories about the ending.

Did the King kill Bobby and Mike invented the ending as a way of dealing with the guilt he felt for not being able to save Bobby from the King's abuse (hence Tom Hanks's line about telling the story how he remembers it)?
Did the flying contraption crash and Bobby perished in said crash? Was it a suicide?
Was Bobby even real?

Maybe this was solved long ago and this thread is dumb. Oh well.

I always kinda figured that bobby wasn't real, and that it was how mike dealt with the pain.

but who knows, great movie either way.
